When Love Becomes an Idol: The Danger of Losing Yourself in a Relationship

Can you love someone so much that you begin to lose yourself?

In this episode of After the Silence, Katha Blackwell explores the dangerous consequences of placing a spouse or romantic partner on a pedestal. What happens when your happiness, identity, security, and sense of worth become completely dependent on another person?

Love should never require you to abandon yourself, compromise your values, or live in constant fear of losing someone.

Drawing from her faith and more than 20 years of experience in the domestic violence field, Katha unpacks how idolizing a partner can create unhealthy emotional attachments, open the door to manipulation and control, and make it difficult to recognize when a relationship has become harmful.

Domestic violence isn't always physical. Sometimes the warning signs begin with the subtle ways we surrender our voice, boundaries, and independence in the name of love.

The message is simple: You can love someone deeply without making them your everything.

🎙️ Tune in to After the Silence for an honest conversation about love, faith, fear, and the importance of maintaining your identity in relationships.

  • Co-Parenting After Abuse: When Leaving Isn’t the End
    23 Sep 2026

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

Episode 5: Co-Parenting After Abuse: When Leaving Isn’t the End

Leaving an abusive relationship may end the partnership, but when children are involved, it does not always end the contact—or the abuse.

In this episode, Katha Blackwell explores the difficult reality of raising children with an abusive former partner. She discusses how control can continue through custody arrangements, communication, finances, exchanges, scheduling, and even the children themselves. She also explains why traditional co-parenting advice may not be safe or realistic for survivors and how firm boundaries, documented communication, safety planning, and parallel parenting can help reduce conflict.

This is an honest and validating conversation for survivors who have physically left the relationship but are still navigating its emotional and practical aftermath. The goal may not be perfect cooperation. The goal is creating as much safety, stability, and peace as possible for you and your children.

    18 Sep 2026

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

Being interested in a relationship doesn’t always mean you’re ready for one.

In Episode 3.5 of After the Silence, Katha Blackwell takes a deeper dive into four areas that deserve your attention before you start dating: your finances, your home, your children’s needs, and your unresolved trauma.

Can you meet your financial needs? Is your living situation stable? Are your children facing challenges that need your time and attention? Have you begun addressing the hurt you could carry into your next relationship?

This raw, straight-to-the-point follow-up to Episode 3 asks you to get honest about your readiness for love. You don’t have to have a perfect life, but you do need to take responsibility for the life you’re inviting someone into.
