This is the official podcast from Technical Education Skills Trust, the operator of London Design & Engineering UTC, LDE UT6th Form, Engineering Skills College, East London Furniture Institute (ELFI), and the Industry & Educators Exchange (IndEX).
In this episode of Industry Ready, we meet Rachael, Upholstery Course Lead at the East London Furniture Institute (ELFI), who introduces learners and parents/carers to the creative, practical world of upholstery. Rachael explains how the T Level combines design knowledge with plenty of hands-on workshop experience, from transforming dining chairs and creating headboards and footstools to learning industrial sewing and working with textiles and leather. She also explores how traditional upholstery skills have become increasingly relevant today, with sustainability, recycling, and giving old furniture a new lease of life at the heart of the craft.
Rachael also shares what makes the course so special, including professional-standard workshops, 45 days of industry placement, employer involvement, trips, and opportunities to meet people already working within the furniture and creative industries. With pathways into upholstery, furniture, textiles, product, and interior design, learners can develop practical skills, creativity, and confidence that will stay with them for life. Rachael’s passion for an industry that has been part of her own family for generations really shines through — and who knows, that tired old chair at home might just become your first masterpiece! 🪑😊
