Description

Brought to you by Penguin.

The number one Sunday Times best seller.

TLS, Observer, Sunday Times, FT, Guardian, Daily Mail and Evening Standard Books of the Year 2017.

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker, read by John Sackville.

Includes a bonus PDF of graphs and diagrams.

Sleep is one of the most important aspects of our life, health and longevity and yet it is increasingly neglected in 21st century society, with devastating consequences: every major disease in the developed world - Alzheimer's, cancer, obesity, diabetes - has very strong causal links to deficient sleep.

Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why its absence is so damaging to our health. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

Now, in this audiobook, the first of its kind written by a scientific expert, Professor Matthew Walker explores 20 years of cutting-edge research to solve the mystery of why sleep matters. Looking at creatures from across the animal kingdom as well as major human studies, Why We Sleep delves in to everything from what really happens during REM sleep to how caffeine and alcohol affect sleep and why our sleep patterns change across a lifetime, transforming our appreciation of the extraordinary phenomenon that safeguards our existence.

Informative with passionate narrator

I would recommend this book to anybody who is currently sleeping less than 7 hours per night and wants to find a shortcut to improving their life in all aspects. I found the information here enlightening and the evidence compelling.

The narrator is great too, he manages to imitate the various accents and also reads the sentences in a way that very accurately brings across the weight and meaning of the point that Matthew Walker is trying to bring across. I felt like the narrator was the writer himself.

One of the best books

Enlightening! Every policy maker must read this book. Many times we skip straight to solutions. This book is all about the why and I believe it is vital that our why is clear. Why we sleep? Explains the importance of sleep, what improves its quality and what doesn't.

Truly eye-opening

As someone who viewed sleep as a pesky interruption to my free-time activity, and who had heard somewhere that only REM sleep was important, this was truly eye-opening.
While I knew the standard 8-hours-a-night guideline, the reasons for this seemed vague and uncompelling. Until now.
Essentially, a full night's sleep offers an almost miraculous list of psychological and health benefits, including memory consolidation, problem solving, processing of emotions, cleansing the brain of harmful compounds amassed during the day, immune reinforcement, blood-vessel cleansing, etc. etc.
Only a few chapters into this book, I was already convinced enough of sleep's importance to cut down my caffeine intake from five to one cup of caffeinated coffee per day.

Life-changing!

A must read. I wish I had this knowledge years ago. Fantastic! You will not believe how lack of sleep are linked to cancer, Alzheimers, ADHD and so much more and how sleeping tablets and alcohol shortens your life as it steals your sleep. Probably the most profound book after the Bible that I have ever read.

informative yet predictable

Good information although a little dragged out. Some of the chapters cover the same topic and could be summarized quicker.

Should be titled "Fall Asleep"

I first heard Matthew Walker on Joe Rogan's show and found him interesting, which is why I was so disappointed with his book. Filled with stats, figures and countless examples of lab experiments on hapless animals, the material is dry and fails to deliver much in the way of ground breaking information. Driving while sleepy is dangerous? You don't say. People are more moody the day after a restless night? Get out. A long-winded thesis that I struggled to finish while waiting for the light bulb moment that never came.

Essential reading for a healthy society

John Sackville reads beautifully. Practical sleep ideas backed up with scientific facts. A little repetitive.

Excellent book! Very informative

Written in a lively, interesting way, almost like a novel. It made me appreciate sleep more and pay attention to sleeping enough, since it is the basis for health and beauty and a whole lot more, like Alzheimers' prevention...

The only drawback for me was the frequent referring to the evolution theory. I believe in a wise, loving Creator and it is perfectly fine to me if not everything can be explained in scientific terms. He is much bigger than us, you know?

The speaking is well done and encourages to keep on listening to the recording.
I highly believe that reading this book has the power to truly improve your life, health and sleep quality.

Probably importantly but too long and boring

This book has lots of good stuff in it but like 80% of it is so boring that I stopped after 11 hours, short of pulling out my ears.

Love the bit where the narrator does Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger accents.

Narrator a bit plummy.

Mainly interesting to me, a non scientist, for the anecdotes so I could have done without the lengthy descriptions of biological processes and experiments. Reads at times like a textbook or academic article.

Nevertheless, I do think that this book has substantial changed the way I understand and prioritise sleep.
