Description

Based on a true story and inspired by the author’s real-life undercover days and best-selling memoir, his debut crime fiction story brings to life Steve Regan, a laid-back badass undercover cop in the Steve Regan Undercover Cop trilogy.

The title of book one in the series is a nod to identity confusion often experienced by cops who are deep undercover.

As Regan goes deep undercover, he starts to have problems separating reality from fiction. He works in a world of duplicity leading to the ultimate question: How does Regan know people are who they say they are?

Tempted by the riches of drug smuggling so he can help a loved one, Regan wonders whether he can go "rogue" and cross the line.

Regan infiltrates a South American cartel headed up by a Miami-based Mob-connected drug lord. Becoming involved in a million-dollar cocaine deal escalates the dangers of working undercover.

On his return to the United Kingdom from Miami, Regan discovers a plot to kill a leading barrister. Is this linked to the Mob and drug cartel?

Faced with a race against time through London to prevent the barrister’s murder, Regan is confronted by more questions and threats to his life. Just how far will the Mob go to protect its interests? You will be shocked to discover the measures these gangsters will use to stay free and out of jail.

If you like hard-boiled crime fiction or are a Jack Reacher fan, this book is for you. Original-concept crime fiction about an undercover cop written by a former undercover cop!

"I knew when I read the author's first book, Undercover: Operation Julie, although non-fiction that he could make the transition to writing fiction; I was right. He has an ease of language that lends itself to storytelling; he tells it as if he was there in the plot and why shouldn't he having been an undercover cop in the real world?" (Pat McDonald, British crime author)

Undercover cop

I think some of the actions a bit on the shocking side but the characters are original and engaging and the plot is well thought out. The world is described well and it’s easy to picture the scene as you listen/ read along.

Realistic view of a dangerous profession

After reading Stephen Bentley's description of real world undercover cops in Operation Julie, I was expecting his first novel to reflect the realities he experienced in real life. I was not disappointed. Though there were periods where the story dragged a bit, another short chapter later, I was listening intently wondering and wishing how things were going to turn out.

The audio book is a great diversion while engaged in one of those boring tread mill exercise sessions. There were a couple of sessions that I extended because I wanted to hear what would happen next. Bentley admits in the beginning that parts of the story are derived from his real life's work as described in Operation Julie. It shows in his descriptions of colleagues and those with whom he associated in the alter ego of Steve Reagan.

Reading his first book is not a prerequisite to reading the first of his novels, but to me, it enhanced the realism he puts into his characters and it allows me to forgive those times when the characters in the novel are a bit larger than life.

All in all, it was a great listen. I am looking forward to more of Steve Reagan.

Very Interesting!

For long stretches of nights.

Never talk about that in public.

Hash tones and pierce mode

Using more than I usually do.

Suzy delivered a rousing speech.

You are into business and the time is up for you to pay your taxes can be very threatening. This reminded me of a poignant discussion I once had with my Line Manager.

The chicken cordon bleu remained uneaten. Isn’t such expression very interesting? Your Friends should be filtered in order for them to pass through the testing of trustworthiness. You need to order this book now and get to know this important truth about your line of friends.

What the fuck! Is the expression, my 10-year old son, EMSL told me that it was a foul language and should not listen to such a book. Well, he failed to know that the book is sweet to listen in spite of the foul language.

I’m a fucking nobody. Play acting? What the fuck you’re talking about? Fuck the ticket! I rather pay a fine of a ticket than being killed. It is also an important lesson I grabbed from this book, which might soon and very soon serve me like a recipe to save myself in any dangerous encounter. I don’t need to tell you more to that the book is awesome.

Who the fuck do you think you are?

I thought I’m going to die anyway, so I told them anyway. This is what fear can do to any of us. So, in such instances be very careful how you disclose life-threatening information to authorities of any kind.

In the next 30 seconds, the tables were turned around. A statement that made me reflect deeply on my past life and how the tables were turned around in my favour.

What are we going to do, are you in or out? Many a time, even in normal life, we need such frank lessons to be put across to either our friends or closed relatives. Because those who betrayed us aren’t our enemies in the first place, but closed members to us. So this book taught me to be vigilant in my future dealings with closed members in my personal life. You need to get it, please.

“Great tight nice pussy.” “See you in bed.” are expressions that made me love the book the more.

We all have experienced a situation like this before, wherein you are a peace abiding fellow and somebody from nowhere is there to just torment you. You’re obliged to give it back to them just like this case.

Mental toughness.

What beats my imagination is the patoi that was spoken in the process while the reading was going on. Very awesome, which made me feel like I was in Freetown.

Please get your copy and enjoy one of the best British narrators.

Great Novella

Stephen was an undercover cop and his expertise with the subject matter in this novella is clear. And, in fact, my only (minor) criticism of the whole thing is that this is stressed in the prologue - I'd have left this until the end and thrown the reader straight into the action. There are some nice twists en route to the end of this novel and the lead character feels like he will grow as the trilogy unfolds. The narrator is excellent and his English accent really works well with the material. Note: I solicited and received a free copy of this book for review. This review is my opinion and I have not been offered any inducements for a favorable review.

Good book

The sound is okay. I can hear some background static. But if you can get past that it is not a back listen. It moves pretty fast so I had to relished to some parts because I do things when I listen. I would recommend this book to the right person.
