Stephen Sondheim is one of Broadway's most cherished songwriters and the creator of American theater blockbusters like Into the Woods and Sunday in the Park with George. Before he was an eight-time Tony Award winner, he was a teenager who loved writing and theater. Stephen was mentored by his neighbor Oscar Hammerstein II, who just so happened to be one of the most successful lyricists of the early 1900s. This is when he learned all about how to make a musical and its individual songs memorable. Stephen's brilliant lyrics for West Side Story debuted when he was just twenty-five years old. From that point on, his career was nonstop. Stephen contributed to twenty musicals, and his Broadway career spanned for nearly seventy years. Some of his most memorable works include Sweeney Todd, Company, and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
