In the bitter winter of January 1692, Arctic air hovered over the coastal community, trapping the snow-capped village in a perpetual state of bone-chilling temperatures. But within the bleakness, a new kind of fear also settled over Salem. The trouble began in the parsonage. One morning, 9-year-old Elizabeth Parris awoke exhibiting strange symptoms. Down the hall, her eleven-year-old cousin, Abigail Williams, displayed similar symptoms. The doctor was called, but no explanation could be found to account for such disturbing behavior. Fear quickly turned to panic and took hold of the village. Soon, the odd contagion spread, infecting other young girls. Who was to blame for this plague? The answer was very clear: Satan had arrived in the village! Accusations were thrust, and the trials began. Nine months passed, and many were arrested and jailed. By the spring, even the promise of warm temps and sunshine could not convince the residents of Salem that life was as it always was. Nothing was normal. Instead, the village was held in a state of fear and uncertainty that would not let go.
