Description

Stavern, 1983. After a brutal robbery, a young policeman named William Wisting is edged off the investigation by more experienced officers, but soon he is on another case that has not even been recognised as murder.

Forgotten in a dilapidated barn stands a bullet-riddled old car, and it looks as if the driver did not get out alive. This case will shape William Wisting as a policeman and give him insight that he will carry with him for the rest of his career.

"This tense entry to William Wisting's story turns out to be a satisfying mystery expertly unraveled." (Mark Douglas-Home)

Excellent

The author does an excellent job of story telling. I've read all of his books that have translated into english, This one continues the awesome series featuring Mr. Wisting! Even as I neared the end of this one, I could not help but look forward to the next book in the series. The narrator as usual is phenomenal, he is in my top 5 narrators.

The Beginning of Detective Wisting

After listening to another William Wisting book, I HAD to go back and begin this series from the first . . . and I'm so glad that I did . . . humble policeman, husband and father in Norway stumbles on to a vintage car in an old barn . . . and it had many tales to tell . . . this is where a young policeman found that he actually wanted to be an investigator . . . and he had a knack for it . . . for those who find the books slow . . . I say you are way too impatient . . . for William Wisting is a thinking man . . . with the BEST instincts . . . and a lot to like . . . great mystery, great story, and GREAT resolution!

it's a keeper!

read several of JL Horst's book of this series and this one does not disappoint. it enjoyable by itself but is even more enjoyable if you read any of the other books previously. I especially like that the characters get some background and you can get an idea of their personalities but at the same time they are not over-explained.
the narrator is awesome. Saul Reichlin is how I found Horst in the first place, he is one of my favorite readers.
the translation into English is really good and natural. for the Americans among us it will sound very British, for the Brits it will be absolutely normal - it's just such a good book.

Great story!

Good story line, full of suspense. Good reader and voice, although delivery is slightly slow. Thoroughly enjoyable.

a real howler

Horst has really outdone himself this time, with a boring plot, A procedural novel that doesn't proceed, And a mystery so scary and enthralling that it might be best used to put young children to sleep. Fans of this author may feel that this howling dog of a tale is another in a long line serviceable murder stories, but who are these people that read this stuff time after time anyway?

I liked it.<br />

Albeit a typical mystery it moved along this keeping one's interest. I will look for more audible books by this author.

Damn Good

Damn good mystery. In a foreign place to me but I felt connected to the action and the characters. I enjoyed the listen. Go for it.

awful - a waste of time

If I could have given zero stars, I would have.

If you can get beyond the contrived voice of the narrator (who sounds like a little old man out of central casting), then you get to a weak storyline and amateurish writing. Perhaps the author had to have a minimum number of words for the publisher, but there was far too much useless description and dialog. The central character comes off as a timid wuss. The premise of the story could have gone in a more interesting direction, but the author did not take the chance making it just plain boring. I only kept listening because a) it was a short book, and 2) I kept thinking it had to get better. A big disappointment - thought I'd try a new Scandinavian mystery writer - but this was not the one to venture into.

Just toooo slow

Any additional comments?

Maybe I should have started with the first book in the series not the prequel. This short book is just tedious. I may try other books in the series someday, but this book is not encouraging.
