Description

Only for those I love would I traipse into the merciless Northlands to risk life, limb, and my exquisite beauty. But do they appreciate it? Do they say, "Gwenvael the Handsome, you are the best among us - the most loved of all dragons?" No! For centuries my family has refused to acknowledge my magnificence, as well as my innate humility. Yet for them, and because I am so chivalrous, I will brave the worst this land has to offer.

So here I stand, waiting to broker an alliance with the one the Northlanders call the Beast. A being so fearful, the greatest warriors will only whisper its name. Yet I, Gwenvael, will courageously face down this terrifying...woman? It turns out the Beast, a.k.a. Dagmar Reinholdt, is a woman - one with steel-gray eyes and a shocking disregard for my good looks. Beneath her plain robes and prim spectacles lies a sensual creature waiting to be unleashed. Who better than a dragon to thaw out that icy demeanor?

And who better than a beast to finally tame a mighty dragon's heart?

Complicated, good story

I’ve listened to this one several times, trying to get the story straight. This is one that I might do better to read from a paper book - there is just so much going on. She had left it to where another story (or 27) can be written after, but this does not end with any cliffhangers. I truly appreciate that! It does tie up several plots from previous books, and will be hard to follow if you haven’t read previous stories in the series. Hollie Jackson is a wonderful narrator. Her voice is unusual and takes some getting used to, but I’ve come to enjoy her way of narration. Looking forward to listening to this one a few more times.

I enjoyed this story

I will not tell a lie I enjoyed these series, I found all the Dragon Kin books narrated by Hollie Jackson hilarious great and I love the way Hollie made each person distinctive and I like the lighthearted approach to everything. The only thing I do not like is the way the women all the women are always insulted by family and enemies alike(slut, cow, sow, and bitch) yet the men get nothing at all. I know some of the insults are made with no malice (especially between the women of the family) intended but it was annoying.

Narration: Nope; Story: Love

I love, love, love Aiken's work, but sweet mother in hell, the narrator nearly kills this book. Her ability to narrate male voices is cringeworthy and consistently throws me out of the story. If I hadn't already read the series myself--I mentioned I love Aiken, right?--I would have asked for my money back because Jackson's narration would've made this a DNF. I prefer Morgan Hallett's narration of the series, but my love of the books compels me to own the audio version however I can get them. There is a line though. Hopefully, they don't pick anyone worse to narrate any of her other books.

NO typical template storyline in this series

So many paranormal romance book series are basesd on templates for each book. This series only uses templates for dragon behavior. No other templates. Wonderful!

Great worldbuilding!

Another great book in this series! I liked this one a bit more than the previous two because of how much it expands on their world, the kingdoms and fiefdoms, the reasons for the war and oh so much political strategy and drama with their gods! There are a lot of characters for sure, but I think its good because each of the books continues building the backstories. It's still possible to follow without having listened to some of the shorter books like "Chains and Flames" which is bundled in Dragon Actually, but it gives a little context to Bercelak the Great's family/ the Cadwaladr Clan who feature in this book. I really like Gwenvael and Dagmar's story. It was nice to get a more well rounded picture of Gwenvael, who despite all his messing about is actually really smart and strategic. He and Dagmar are just perfect for each other. They're both hilarious and the banter was priceless! Can't wait for all this to continue in the next book, and for Ragnar and Kittah's story. I will definitely also be getting the e-books, as I anticipate some of the complexity might be better digested if its read rather than listened to. (And the full series isn't available on Audible)

So far best of series

The first two books were a lot about the relationship between the too main characters. In this book there is the relationship aspect and lots of hot sex, but the author expands the world and gives a very intense plot, which results in a great read and new characters.

Love these characters

Gwenvael and Dagmar are my favorites in this dragon series. I've read the ebook twice but this was the first audio version I've listened to and I liked it very much.

the slut faces the beast

Gwenvael the Handsome is the slut of the family. On a mission for Annwyl the Bloody he turns to the northlands to negotiate for information about a plot to kill Annwyls children. In the cold lands of the north, a climate that breeds harty fighters, where females are kept out of mens business, protected by the males of their familys, poor Gwenvael finds that the beast - a legend of ruthlessness and brutality - is actually ... a female. A little dainty human female. A shortsighted dainty little female.

A female with an always plotting and conniving mind. How can he not adore her?

________ I simply loved the humor in this book. Pragmatic Dagmar, flamboyend Gwenvael - a laugh waiting to start.
