Ada Calhoun
Summary
As she came to the end of her forties, divorced and empty-nested, Ada Calhoun found herself feeling lonely in a way she couldn’t quite put her finger on. The culture of optimization, productivity, and caregiving was wearing her out. While nothing was overtly terrible, there was something decidedly off. In response, she embarked upon a yearlong quest for in-person experiences that might bond her to her fellow human beings, expose her to new opportunities for growth, and help her answer the question: “What now?”
As research, she joined an obscene number of clubs—mah-jongg groups, pickleball classes, the Daughters of the American Revolution, LARPing, death cafes, gardening groups—while exploring the history, psychology, and sociology of the American social club. Her epiphany: each of us can find belonging in our lives—and rebuild civic trust—one book club, church coffee hour, and trivia night at a time.
