Description

Kangaroo isn't your typical spy. Sure, he has extensive agency training, access to bleeding-edge technology, and a ready supply of clever (to him) quips and retorts. But what sets him apart is "the pocket". It's a portal that opens into an empty, seemingly infinite parallel universe, and Kangaroo is the only person in the world who can use it. But he's pretty sure the agency keeps him around only to exploit his superpower.

After he bungles yet another mission, Kangaroo gets sent away on a mandatory "vacation": an interplanetary cruise to Mars. While he tries to make the most of his exile, two passengers are found dead, and Kangaroo has to risk blowing his cover. It turns out he isn't the only spy on the ship - and he's just starting to unravel a massive conspiracy that threatens the entire solar system.

Now Kangaroo has to stop a disaster that would shatter the delicate peace that's existed between Earth and Mars ever since the brutal Martian Independence War. A new interplanetary conflict would be devastating for both sides. Millions of lives are at stake.

Weren't vacations supposed to be relaxing?

With Waypoint Kangaroo, Chen makes his debut with this outer space thriller. Chen has an extensive network of connections to prominent science fiction authors and has studied under John Scalzi, James Patrick Kelly, and Ursula K. LeGuin.

Entertaining

I really enjoyed this book. The narration was well done and the story was entertaining. I also enjoyed that the science bits were believable and sounded well researched. I recommend this book.

Reads like an episode for a CW show

Moderately entertaining, and it did pass the time, but the plot is contrived and not all that interesting and the characters pretty one dimensional. If you're looking for something to stretch your mind and make you think, this isn't it. If you're looking for a quick comic book type read, you might give it a try.

Die Hard in space! With super powers and lots of cool spy craft and just the right amount of tech details to sound real, but not becoming a tech manual.

Consistently awful.

Started with the book and it was bad. The author doesn't know who or what his hero is, what works he inhabits, or (it seems) what people are actually like outside of Knight Rider episodes. But I like finish books so I got the audiobook to do just that. And it was worse. The narrator (who only gets a star because he has to) managed to take trite to new levels, reducing bad rising to an absurd parody thereof. Avoid if you value your time.
