    Description

Thrust by a mysterious portal into an unknown world, Nick Barnette does what anyone would do in his situation: he runs. Now separated from his friends, and being pursued by powerful forces he doesn’t understand, Nick must navigate the Kingdom of Lhasa and figure out how to get home.

Through his trials and tribulations, Nick notices that he has developed a strange power that allows him to slow down time, vastly improving his combat ability. But he doesn’t have any control over the power. And as far as he knows, the only way to cultivate this new power and find his friends is by studying the Way of the Immortals, an ancient tradition practiced by monks and hermits high in the mountains of Lhasa.

It won’t be an easy task, but if anyone is up to the challenge, it’s Nick, who might be the most unconventional hero the Kingdom of Lhasa has ever seen.

Way of the Immortals: Path of the Divine is a western cultivation series weaving Tibetan and Bhutanese lore into a fast-paced novel that xianxia, wuxia and progression fantasy fans will love. Way of the Immortals is written by Harmon Cooper, best-selling science fantasy GameLit author of series like Fantasy Online, House of Dolls, Cherry Blossom Girls, the Feedback Loop, and Monster Hunt NYC.

    A cultivation novel without cultivation...

I found myself having to force myself through this. Let's be clear, this is a portal book with very light xianxia(cultivation) flavor. My main issue is with the main character, he's doggedly set on finding his friends and a way back to Earth despite having a a less fulfilling life there, ignores the culture around him refusing to even slightly accept that he has to work within it, refuses to accept he might be special in any way despite fighting at a level that shouldn't be possible out of "instinct", and is as dumb as a rock. There were moments I hoped things would correct itself. I actually liked that he might be humbled early on but nope only days to get out of that instead of years. I'm fine with, no, I like smart op main character stories. It's why I like the xianxia genre. There are better options for this genre on audible. Try a Thousand Li by Tao Wong or the Cradle series by Wight if you want a good western take on this genre. If you want translations of where all this is coming from they're mostly web novels at the moment. Just search Xianxia or cultivation novels online. Stay away from this.

    Unconventional Cultivation!

    Good story and Narration!

Nick is a live in the moment and don't worry about tomorrow sort. He and other members of his buddy's bachelor party are sucked through a portal into a harsh world where it is everyone for themselves, and cultivation is (for some) a way of life. As they are quickly separated by strange twists of fate, how will Nick's live in the now attitude serve him in a world full of people looking for any opportunity to take advantage?

This one was an interesting twist on the typical cultivation theme.

I can't wait to find out what happens next!

    Note:
If you are into cultivation stories and are having some trouble getting into this MC - keep going - Nick is adjusting to a world where his previous outlook is not compatible. He comes around.

Better bachelor party outcome than 'The Hangover'

Way of the Immortals is a MUCH better outcome to a bachelor party than 'The Hangover' or any bachelor party I've been too.

Excellent character development and pace to the series with really interesting ancillary characters that feel real. Being book 1 the beginning setup is a bit deux ex machina, but I expect that to be fleshed out in the later books.

    Impressed

As this is my first cultivation story of any kind I have to say it was enjoyable. It certainly had Cooper's flair and was well done by the narrator. I am looking forward to the next one.

A different, enjoyable divergence from Xianxia

This is a cultivation novel, but of a different style than what is currently most popular among the recent Western releases of that genre. It very much reminded me of classic mythology and tales of the style of Journey to the West, where the focus is as much on strange interactions with strange creatures and people as it is on combat. I was surprised by the differences from what I've grown unconsciously used to, but it was a pleasant surprise. I was uninterested in sex scenes, but it was a very minor and short portion of the book. The characters and world introduced are really the stars here- I want more Roger and Landon, and to learn more about the upper and lower realms and how reincarnation functions in this new world. I'm eager to read the next one!

    Cool wuxia

I really liked the emphasis on skill development and fighting improvement. This book is very well narrated.

I thought it was a very good book, I like the main character but it was kind of inventive. I really haven't done any of these Chinese sort of books I thought this was a very good introduction and I'm looking forward to the next ones
