Description

From S. E. Smith, New York Times and USA Today best-selling author, comes this emotionally charged coming-of-age story filled with action, adventure, and suspense for listeners of all ages.

An act of defiance will either kill her or change her life forever.

Sixteen-year-old Makayla Summerlin enjoyed one thing in her crazy, messed-up existence: hanging with her friends at school. But her life is uprooted when she suddenly finds herself forced to live with a grandfather she barely remembers. One act of defiance will change her life forever. Having trouble adjusting to her new home, she sets sail in her grandfather's old sailboat. On a journey that will challenge everything she has ever believed about herself, Makayla must overcome her fears if she, and a surprising stowaway, are to survive.

Young Adventure Story

If you could sum up Voyage of the Defiance in three words, what would they be?

Strong, dedicated & brave.

What did you like best about this story?

The fact I could visualize this young gal and guy doing what they did.

Have you listened to any of Suzanne Elise Freeman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No this I believe was a first.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Oh there were times I cried, ah okay there was many times I cried. But I laughed also.

Any additional comments?

I usually like more adult themed books, but this was a very nice change for me. SE Smith did a great job.

Discovering yourself

I listened to this a few years ago and just re-listened to it. This time I'm posting a review. S.E.Smith is one of my favorite authors, but this was my first YA audio book I purchased and I did it because liked the way Mrs. Smith wrote. This may be a YA book, but it is well written that all ages will enjoy. Its not about romance but relationships, self discovery, life, and choices. How Makayla ended up choosing to discover who she really is.

Makayla is 16 or 17 in this book and a junior/senor in H.S. in Tampa Fl, Her mother is admitted into the Hospital due to drug addition to prescription pills. Because of this she moves in with her Grandfather 3 hours away. She calls him old man or Henry. While living there she learns about sailing, starting school as a senor there and is bullied. In an act of defiance she takes the sail boat to return to Tampa.

Tyrone is also a senor at the same school however he lives with his grandmother, in the poorer area and has to deal with drive by shooting, gangs, and the fear of dying young due to the violence of the neighborhood. After a shooting that almost kills him and his grandmother he attempts to return a book Makayla had dropped at school when she was jumped. The results of an evening at the hospital causing a lack of sleep and wanting to stop Makayla from running away he becomes a stowaway when he falls asleep onboard.

These two were strangers that life collided and became friends. They learned from each other and changed their minds about some things. They learned who there were through life and death experiences. Was this action packed not stop that you couldn't put the book down? No, but I don't think it was meant to be. However, the story did run smoothly without and hiccups or dragged though. It was slow at the beginning but even then, Mrs. Smith didn't drag the story. She gave transitional time changes from the end of the school year through summer and the begging of the new school year to the beginning of the voyage and the end of the voyage, Thus the end of the story.

This was the first time I had heard the narrator. Her voice was pleasant, smooth, and able to capture the heart of the story and characters. There wasn't any exterior noises or sound like someone is in an empty room. The editing was well done and you could enjoy the story without any distractions that would pull you from it making you annoyed. This is a narrator I will look for again.

This is not a book I personally would listen to multiple times a year or a favorite to play all the time, although as I said its been several years since I listened to it. I am currently listening to all my audio books again and it was nice a find in my titles. As this is a series, I will definitely be listening to the next book in the series because I liked Makayla, Tyrone, and Henry. As to whether its worth a credit I think it may be, but if you can get it on sale it is a definite.

Amazing!!

The best coming of age story I ever had the pleasure of reading / listen to. If any coming of age story should become a movie this should be the first on the list!
