The narrator’s performance was amazing, she brought each character to life with distinct voices and captured all the emotion and tension in the story perfectly. I truly loved it!
As for the story:
The beginning of this book feels very reminiscent of The Little Mermaid, which made it a bit hard to get into at first. It felt like I already knew exactly where the story was going. But once Celeste, the main character, strikes her deal with the Sea Witch, the plot takes an unexpected turn and that’s when things really get interesting.
I would have given this book four stars because the conflict near the end is genuinely compelling, but I had to remove a star for the cliffhanger ending. Personally, I think the first book in a series should tell a complete story and save the cliffhangers for later volumes. I spent most of this book thoroughly enjoying myself, only to be left feeling overwhelmingly disappointed (and honestly, a little angry) that the story just stops without any real resolution. It leaves you stranded, with no sense of closure and no idea what the hell is going on.
But overall, I really did enjoy most of the story. Celeste is very emotional, but the way her feelings are tied to her power makes it all the more beautiful. The crew is amazing (especially Kiyami!!!). I loved their dynamic throughout the story. The characters were incredibly endearing and, in my opinion, are this book’s greatest strength.
