    Description

    The Sages must die.

For centuries, the immortal sorcerers have warred, perpetuating a continent-shattering conflict whose beginning has been lost to time and whose ending may never come. Immersed in their own petty rivalries, the power-mad titans have forgotten the true war. They have forgotten what lurks in the darkness between realms and whispers promises into the void.

     But some remember.

An ancient race of elemental warriors stand in the midst of the chaos, enduring the War of Sages while preparing to face the true threat. Among these powerful defenders, the flame-wielding Embers have long been mightiest, with some said to be capable of rivaling the Sages themselves.

But now, their light is fading, and few remain to push back the darkness.

When Kole Reyna, Ember of Last Lake, sets out to challenge the Sages, once and for all, he ignites a war beyond reckoning.

Kole has never believed in destiny, but with his people hanging on the precipice and his home on the brink of ruin, he must discover the limits of the one power he fears above all else.

    His own.

Publisher’s note: Valley of Embers (Third Edition) represents a rewritten and improved version of the 2016 self-published release, with new prose, expanded lore, a fresh intro, and extended ending.

excellent performance and a solid story

I really enjoyed this book and especially the performance. The story was unique and engaging and I look forward to the character development that appears to deepen the second book. I also enjoy the fact that this book is just the beginning and appears to be weaving a much larger story.

    Tolkien meets Miyazaki indeed ...

A truly unique epic fantasy that blends eastern and classic western epic fantasy traditions, with an elemental magic system and a huge cast of characters. This one isn't just about a dude with fire swords. There's a lot more than meets the eye. Well worth investing the time, and I think it's only going to get bigger from here.

    Hell yeah

Just fantastic. Both the story and the narration are absolutely epic—Peter Kenny is incredible. Great dialogue, awesome prose, stunning scope. Fantastic work! Bring on the next!

    dreary

The voice actor doesn't have a bad voice but his rhythm and tone grate on my nerves, it's always a bit too fast and a bit too monotone.

Character interactions are stilted and unorganic, especially conversations/discussions can change directions so fast and without any reason that they're hard to follow and can rip the reader/listener out of the flow of the story.
Characters overall are extremly dreary without a big selection of secondary character traits wich makes it hard to differentiate between most characters. Most characters can almost entirely be categorized by a slider from "resigned, sad and dreary" to "angry, sad and dreary".
I also don't understand why these ppl are so afraid of other ppl with strong flame powers, the leader can just put them in a place where they don't endanger other ppl or important structures and then they can let loose without any problems.

The whole world building is hampered by too much irrelevant information in the exposition dumps while important things like their governing body are not explained at all, one has to try to piece together clues throughout the story to get a muddled picture of the structure.

In short I don't like this story.
