Description
An instant New York Times best seller
A timely and passionate call to action for engaging with our current political moment, from the Grammy-nominated and multiplatinum singer-songwriter and New York Times best-selling author Tori Amos.
Since the release of her first, career-defining solo album Little Earthquakes, Tori Amos has been one of the music industry’s most enduring and ingenious artists. From her unnerving depiction of sexual assault in “Me and a Gun” to her post-September 11 album, Scarlet’s Walk, to her latest album, Native Invader, her work has never shied away from intermingling the personal with the political.
Amos began playing piano as a teenager for the politically powerful at hotel bars in Washington, DC, during the formative years of the post-Goldwater and then Koch-led Libertarian and Reaganite movements. The story continues to her time as a hungry artist in Los Angeles to the subsequent three decades of her formidable music career.
Amos explains how she managed to create meaningful, politically resonant work against patriarchal power structures - and how her proud declarations of feminism and her fight for the marginalized always proved to be her guiding light. She teaches us to engage with intention in this tumultuous global climate and speaks directly to supporters of #MeToo and #TimesUp, as well as young people fighting for their rights and visibility in the world.
Filled with compassionate guidance and actionable advice - and using some of the most powerful, political songs in Amos’ canon - this audiobook is for anyone determined to steer the world back in the right direction.

A must read for anybody interested in the history of the USA and music from the 1970s
What a great book! And hearing it read by the author is just brilliant. Tori Amos tells 40 plus years of American politics, history through the eyes and experience of Tori Amos, one of the most incredible music performer as well as song writer. The combination of her sTori with history is simply wonderful. Let’s resist!

A must-read!
My eternal Tori love aside, it really did not come as a surprise that such a skilled and prolific storyteller like Tori Amos herself finally decided to put all of her experience in the music industry for over 3 decades. Just listen to her read out loud her songs (via audiobook) and you can feel the emotion, the passion, and at times the sadness, and most importantly the story in each word.
Those who are familiar with her catalogue already know Tori does not like to shy away from expressing her opinion, especially about politics. It’s always been there; from her first album to the last, in interviews, in radio talks... What has impressed me the most about Resistance is how effortlessly Tori expresses herself and provides a clear sonic timeline of a history that’s utterly personal and universal at the same time, without sounding corny, condescending or overtly political.
I have always admired Tori Amos as a singer, songwriter and a human being and now as a writer and can only hope there’ll be more of this in the future.

I have been listening since 1993...
I don't know why I was scared to begin this book. Perhaps, I feared the kind of a disappointment that only an American teacher during COVID-19 feels. I was not. I was, and am, blown away!

Peaks and Valleys
This book averages to middling to good review though few parts of the book reflect this. Much more so, it's filled with extremes. One chapter will be painfully dull history lessons and her reading her lyrics (which don't work at all as unsung spoken word). Then you'll spend several nail biting chapters as she explores raw personal topics. Then back to unnecessary analysis.
Resistance would have been much better if she'd skipped the advocacy and let her experiences speak for themselves. When Tori is talking about her own experiences and retelling the personal stories of those she meets, this is when the book is at its best.

Exceeded my expectations completely.
Listen, my life was forever changed as a teenager when I heard Caught a Lite Sneeze on the radio for the first time. I am a songwriter and have had quite a different journey. However, at the age of 41, listening to Tori masterfully narrate her thoughtful personal and political work has brought me so much comfort and confidence. It was much like listening to an old friend, both of us much wiser now. We must out-create the destructive forces and Tori helps you. There is healing and mending in the new understandings of her songs I used to sing to keep my head above my own emotional waters. I can’t recommend this book enough.

I could use another dose of Tori reading her lyrics
Tori is a true Bard , a storyteller who understands where and what stories are. Her reading the words she has penned brings life to them in a way that is undeniably inspiring and brimming with emotion. I’m so grateful this is on audible. Her lyrics, strategically placed in the book, take on a whole other life form as she reads them. I am left hoping for her to write another book and have it on audible book. I could use a Resistance Volume II where she speaks more on creativity and reads more of her lyrics. They truly live and breathe differently in this form and it is so inspiring as a songwriter to hear them in this way.....

I loved this so much
Of course I have been a fan for 30 years. But the political observations were unexpected, the family stories interesting and colorful, and the artist inspiration-well it’s like reading The Artist’s Way. It was inspiring

Tori as always is amazing & takes my breath away!
I could listen to Tori speak all day every day! Hearing her speak her songs touched me in a way that was unexpected to me! I learned more about her and her journey through this crazy life we are all a part of. How lucky those people are that are close to her and really know her. The one time I met her at a meet and greet in 2014 I was pregnant and star struck. Unfortunately I had no words and I am sure I seemed like a wierdo. We named our daughter Victoria. Some people call her Tori. I don't think we did that consciously. She is 5 years old. I started playing piano when I was 5. I am teaching my daughter to play piano too. I have been a fan since I first discovered her in 1994 when I was in high school and have been pretty obsessed ever since. Not many people I know can understand how I can still keep listening to the same artist after 27 years and still try to make an appearance to a show with every U.S. tour. I will be listening to this again and again I am sure. I have the hard copy of the book as well. Thank you Tori for putting your heart, your voice, your stories and everything you are out into the world and allowing us into yours! You are a magical unbreakable powerful force that has helped so many heal, love, forgive, trust and be able to keep going through our own struggles and journeys. I am forever grateful. Even though you do not know me (and this may sound crazy) but you and your work get me through most days. When I do not know what else to do, I turn you on and I seem to be able to calm down, work it out and get through the day. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR EVERYTHING!!! ASG

Tori recites her songs as poems & shares memories
I LOVED hearing Tori herself recount the events that lead to many of her songs and share memories of her family who have passed.
