    Description

The Way Forward will help every reader master their own challenges—this is a must-read book!” —Admiral Bill McRaven, U.S. Navy (Retired) and author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Make Your Bed

American Sniper meets Make Your Bed in these life lessons from decorated United States service members and New York Times bestselling authors Robert O’Neill and Dakota Meyer—an in-depth, fearless, and ultimately redemptive account of what it takes to survive and thrive on battlefields from Afghanistan and Iraq to our daily lives, and how the perils of war help us hold onto our humanity.

Rob O’Neill and Dakota Meyer are two of the most decorated and recognized US service members: O’Neill killed the world’s most wanted man, Osama bin Laden, and Meyer was the first living Marine to receive the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War. But beyond their actions and courage in combat, O’Neill and Meyer also have much in common in civilian life: they are both sought-after public speakers, advocates for veterans, and share a non-PC sense of humor. Combining the best of military memoirs and straight-talking self-help, The Way Forward alternates between O’Neill’s and Meyer’s perspectives, looking back with humor at even the darkest war stories, and sharing lessons they learned along the way.

The Way Forward presents O’Neill and Meyer’s philosophy in combat and life. This isn’t a book about the glory of war and combat, but one about facing your enemies, some who are flesh and blood and some that are not: Your thoughts. Your doubts. Your boredom and your regrets. From Rob’s dogged repetition at the free throw line of his childhood basketball court to Dakota’s pursuit of EMT and firefighter credentials to aid accident victims, these two American heroes turn their experiences into valuable lessons for every listener.

Gritty and down-to-earth, O’Neill and Meyer tell their stories with candor and vulnerability to help readers handle stress, tackle their biggest obstacles, and exceed their expectations of themselves, while keeping life’s battles in perspective with a sense of humor.

    Hit with emotions

I purchased this book after listening to Dakota and Rob on Andy Frisella's RealAF podcast (later listened to Dakota on Joe Rogan's JRE podcast). I liked the message from these gentlemen and so I purchased the audiobook, not really knowing what to expect. Maybe some sort of generic self help book. Let me say, at minimum I was pleasantly surprised.

Yes the message is finding your way, overcoming obstacles, self help so to speak... And yes it's told from the experiences of the authors. However, it is presented in a way that is not preachy nor steps to take. There are principles presented, albeit in brief "this is what it is" delivery which is then followed up by tales from their lives. These stories tell a tale of true warrior mindset and all of it's triumphs and glory but also in it's everlasting struggle and hardship. A warrior is not always resilient, a warrior will stumble, question, and doubt... But he never gives up.

Lastly, this book evoked unexpected emotions at times and truly took me on a path of self reflection.

To the authors, thank you for allowing yourself to be vulnerable and tell your tales... I wish you both the very best in your futures.

    Just war stories

The title of this book is fraudulent. "Master Life's Toughest Battles and Create Your Lasting Legacy" These two men take turns telling war stories while making zero connection to anything else. THEY mastered life's toughest battles and THEY created a legacy. That's all they cover in this book... What THEY did. That's it.

There's no 'moral of the story', no connection between their experiences and civilian life and how it helped them or what they learned.

    It's. Just. War. Stories.
There's also a hunting story and a proposal story but everything else is war story.

Some may see it as them bragging. Some may see it as part of them working through the experiences. Some may see it as them making bank. I see it as a bait and switch because the title of this book, it's subtitle and even the chapter titles have absolutely NOTHING to do with it's actual content.

With that said, if you're interested in some firsthand accounts of recent war stories of historical significance, this is definitely the book to get.

    Not what I was expecting

I was expecting a book about goal setting and achieving objectives. The book is a collection of stories and life experiences from the authors. Some amazing, some pitiful.

    There are no words!

There simply are no words to explain how amazing this book really is. I've read both Dakota and Robert's other books and they were phenomenal as well but something about this book was just really special. I cannot tell you how many times I got the chills while listening to this. I'm not a veteran but I do work a job where I'm on the front lines of child abuse and something about these guys words just really resonates with me and gives strength to keep pushing through the daily trials and tribulations in order that I might make a difference in someone's life. I'm not on the same battlefield as Dakota or Robert, but it's a battle every day nonetheless. The stories in this book give me strength, pride and I truly believe that Im a better leader after hearing their words. I'm so grateful that Dakota & Robert took the time to write this and I hope to carry the same warrior mentality that these men posess into my work; they are truly an inspiration.

Perseverance doesn’t only apply to jobs

Though I have read The Operator by Rob, the backstories and other stories provided in this book are great additions. And learning Dakota‘s story, was an honor. The USA is lucky to have guys like this. These two men are a great example of continuing to push when life throws so many curveballs. Even though I will never relate to some of the stresses and hardships these guys have experienced, this book is still an encouragement acknowledging that we all have battles which people can’t see, and don’t ever give up.

    Stories that teach

This book resonated with me in so many. My late husband was a Marine. Desert Storm deployed. Hearing your stories gave me more insight into him as he kept his service private. He was a proud marine but rarely spoke about it. Your stories helped me finally understand who he was, why he was the best person I’ll ever know. Thank you for your service and sharing this.

    Out of the ordinary. Greatness.

if you ever thought to yourself, I can't. This book will prove you can. These two extraordinary men are who they are because they continue to widdle away at being better every day. There are numerous truths told. My favorite being gas station food is iffy at best. Thank you for sharing gentlemen.

    honest opinion

this book is one of a kind. Dekota and rob are truly one of a kind. Dekota's words truly touched me in my soul a few time. This will be a book I listen to many more times to come. Anytime I'm down this will be a go to. Thank you gentlemen.
