In this concluding book of the Sammy/Streiker Salmagundi (begun in If Only for This Life and continued in Abby's Monsters) Dallas detective Sammy Kidman, bored and restless, is waiting for an assignment from his new boss, Dallas billionaire Fletcher Streiker. When Streiker finally responds to Sammy's prompts, it's to give him the unwelcome task of reconnecting with his mother.
Sammy wilts at the prospect of rekindling his relationship with his mother, who gave birth to him when she was an unwed teenager. Worse, under pressure from her parents, she claimed that she had been raped—which was a lie—and Sammy's father subsequently spent about 20 years in prison.
So Sammy is forced to follow through with his mother, who has developed manipulative habits to avoid the truth. With Streiker's guidance, Sammy persists, and the facts come to light in a supernatural wave that washes over everyone involved.
