The sirens blare. The searchlights scan the grounds of Douglass Branch Penitentiary, but brutal serial killer Waylon Prichard is gone. Austin Branch, the namesake of the prison's founder and trained tracker, pursues the killer, but soon discovers an impossible phenomenon that will make his pursuit of Prichard more difficult—and far more dangerous.
And it's not just the killer he has to worry about anymore. What he discovers is far more devastating to the entire world.
Along with his fiancée, Grace Jansen, and with the assistance of Phineas Beckwith, an Englishman from another time, the three follow the killer through a strange portal in the forest to places never before known nor seen by anyone else on earth.
