Pretty decent
I really got into this story after a while, to where I just couldn’t stop listening, but it took a bit to get there. The main character was a bit annoying at first and some of the writer’s phrases annoyed me, but honestly I can look past that because I enjoyed the story. Overall, I would recommend it, but it’s not at the top of my list of favorite fantasy stories. I will however be getting the sequels because I just. Have. To. Know. What. Happens.!

Cheesy romance novel with shallow fantasy backdrop
haven't finished the book because I was hoping for an interesting fantasy piece, but got a somewhat lame soap opera with a fantasy backdrop instead.
characters are flat and lack credibility and the story is mainly about a love triangle with some uninspired fantasy elements mixed in.
it's "a court of thorns and roses" all over again 🙄
the narrator isn't bad but lacks diversity in character representation.

Mediocre story, great narration voice
Overall, the plot was mediocre and at times stupid. The prose where good. Characters were the usual fantasy tropes. I am not going to read the rest of her books.

Not a good start for the series, but...
still enough to make me listen to the other books. I felt that she is exaggerating the voices for some characters and found it annoying and the story isn’t really that good. The characters however are interesting and that’s why I continued the series and it gets way better in the following books! So I would still recommend this to anyone who is looking for a good fantasy series.

Nice story, characters can be improved
Celeana is a typical protagonist for Sarah J Maas, beautiful, strong, gets EVERY man's attention, sarcastic. That's not a problem in itself, I could just personally identify myself better with her if she had insecurities or flaws or if her character acted impulsively or wrong sometimes, including some consequences. Just a little more realism, no one is perfect and never acts out. And of course she gets along really well with her archenemies, we know that from ACOTAR .. why do Dorian and ... the captain see her as trustworthy and joke around with her like 2 days after they met? A bit strange ... The story itself is exciting and the story about magic is interesting, it is also very well written :)
The ending with the old queen was a bit far-fetched, why is Celeana so important to her? Otherwise I don't really have any complaints, I hope Celeana and the captain get together, they are cute.

mediocre fantasy
somehow annoying that protagonist is a "trained assassin" but the prince sneaks up at her every second time 🙄
