Avis de l'équipe

"Now that was some serious, bleeping fun. For a few hours – amidst the sounds of morphing extraterrestrials, ignited flamethrowers, and the sonic tremble of spaceships overhead – it felt like I had stolen away into the world of The X-Files and been treated to my very own mini-season. Of course, listening to Duchovny and Anderson verbally spar as the iconic pairing of Mulder and Scully is an X-Philes' delight. But, for me, hearing the liquid honey – though sinister – croon of William B. Davis' Cigarette Smoking Man AND the giddy shenanigans of the original Lone Gunmen was worth the price of admission alone. Add to that top-notch sound design and a story that doses out ‘Monster of the Week' thrills and ‘mytharc’ reveals (canonical arguments be damned, this was just too fun), and you have yourself one can't-miss listen for fans." -Doug, Audible Editor

Description

The series that had a generation looking to the sky gets a breathtaking audio reprise in an original full-cast dramatization featuring actors David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson returning to voice FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.

Based upon the graphic novels by Joe Harris - with creative direction from series creator Chris Carter - and adapted specifically for the audio format by aural auteur Dirk Maggs (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Alien: Out of the Shadows), and directed by William Dufris of AudioComics, Cold Cases marks yet another thrilling addition to the pantheon of X-Files stories. Featuring a mind-blowing and otherworldly soundscape of liquefying aliens, hissing creatures, and humming spacecraft, listeners get to experience the duo's investigations like never before.

Set after the events of The X-Files: I Want to Believe and providing additional backstory to the incidents that pulled Mulder and Scully out of reclusion prior to 2016's miniseries revival, a database breach at FBI headquarters allows an unknown group to access and capitalize on those investigations left unsolved - dubbed cold cases - by the secret department once known as The X-Files. As friends and foes of the agency long thought gone begin to inexplicably reappear, former agents Mulder and Scully come out of anonymity to face a growing conspiracy that involves not only their former department but the US government and forces not of this world.

Here, fans are treated once again to Mulder and Scully's irreplicable chemistry as only the series' leads could deliver, Duchovny's deadpan and cynical aloofness finding its natural counterpoint in Anderson's unwavering intelligence and rigidity. Appearances from series regulars and the actors who made them fan favorites round out this must-listen arc: the gruff, no-BS righteousness of Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi); the distinctive click-puff of the Cigarette Smoking Man (William B. Davis); and the stooge-like hijinks of three beloved conspiracy theorists called the Lone Gunmen (Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund, and Bruce Harwood).

Whether you're a believer or a skeptic, find your "I Want to Believe" poster. Break out that makeshift alien stiletto. Grab a pack of Morley cigarettes.

The truth is out there. You just have to listen.

New Fan

I haven't really seen the tv show and only watched the film with the bees (and never saw the reboot) so my exposure to X-Files is really limited.

Overall, while I felt the audio production was above average and the voice acting pretty great, I didn't really understand the stories and kept wondering how everything was connected. I was expecting a regular novel but this was mostly just vignettes. I also found it hard to keep up with all the different characters; this is my first time listening to an audio book that sounded more like a podcast than a regular book.

I think this is something mostly for fans of the series who follow the franchise more closely. But I think my interest has peaked so I might check out the original series and reboot!

Surprisingly good!!

Thought it was going to be cheesy or bad but it was a great revisit to the X-Files! A fun ride, with all the things I love about the original series: humor, intelligent writing, Mulder and Scully.. Try it out! Definitely worth a listen!!

First Audiobook...

This is my first purchase off Audible and I'm happy with it. Loved having DD, GA and MP back in their roles and felt like I was right there in the middle of an episode! Hope they do more of these performance pieces!

Brilliant X-File!

Not the standard audio book. Performed like a radio play, you are completely swept up in the story. This book includes conspiracy and aliens and even the old favorite monster of the week. The chapters are episodes and there are several during the 4hr time frame . I would recommend this to every X-Files fan, and anyone who loves a well told story!

This is amazing. Plz more with the Original Cast!!

If you could sum up The X-Files: Cold Cases in three words, what would they be?

Excellent. Awesome. Wonderful.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mulder and Scully, of course.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No. This is my first time.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, I laughed and wanted to cry. I was so happy to hear David and Gillian as Mulder and Scully. To hear the Lone Gunmen and Skinner.

Any additional comments?

My only criticism is not for this but for CC. William is Mulder's son, CC. Come on. Anyway, other than that. This was excellent. Excellent.

Captured the heart of the original

The voice acting is spotty at times, especially from the two main actors, which is ironic since they were in the original TV series. They weren't bad, but were out acted by the surrounding cast at times. The production quality is fantastic however, and the stories thematically mirrored the originals perfectly. Overall quite enjoyable.

I'm not an X Files fanatic by any stretch, but I did enjoy this audio performance. It's well done and fun :)

Wonderful for X-Files Fans

This audio-drama was So So So So So good!! I loved the stories and the short “episodes” within the 4 hours. I loved the sound effects and the tone of the stories.

The only thing I did not like was the monotonous sound of Gillian and David reading. I feel as if they could have put more effort into reading lines.

Selling a great brand for cheap

Warning: slight Spiolers ahead!

I confess: I liked the first two episodes: hearing the original cast was great, the sound effects were good and the way the narrative explained the setting was exciting.

Then came the crash: Duchovny reads his lines like he doesn't care at all. Case in point: in one episode Mulder finds hinself in the middle of a gun-fight - yet Duchovny delivers his lines in a tone cashiers use when wishing customers a nice day. His voice is devoid of any emotion or sense of urgency. Gillian Anderson is slightly better and the voice of Krycek is abysmal.
Best exceptions from this rule: the vocalization of Skinner and the CSM.

The plot is a convoluted train-wreck; especially in the later episodes one extraordinary development is followed by the next (even crazier story) within 5 minutes - taking place in several locations to mimick the effect of "plot development". The finale sees one of those plot developments that comes totally out of the blue (Deus Ex Machina fallacy) and is just lazy writing to bring this mess of a story to a sudden end - with major storylines unanswered (see: the question marks behind Krycek's and CSM's appearance).

I don't recommend buying this audio-book - it comes off as a half-cooked spin-off for making a quick buck out of fans of the series.
