Description
From John Grisham, America's number one best-selling author, comes the most electrifying novel of the year, a high-stakes thrill ride through the darkest corners of the Sunshine State.
We expect our judges to be honest and wise. Their integrity and impartiality are the bedrock of the entire judicial system. We trust them to ensure fair trials, to protect the rights of all litigants, to punish those who do wrong, and to oversee the orderly and efficient flow of justice.
But what happens when a judge bends the law or takes a bribe? It's rare, but it happens.
Lacy Stoltz is an investigator for the Florida Board on Judicial Conduct. She is a lawyer, not a cop, and it is her job to respond to complaints dealing with judicial misconduct. After nine years with the board, she knows that most problems are caused by incompetence, not corruption.
But a corruption case eventually crosses her desk. A previously disbarred lawyer is back in business with a new identity. He now goes by the name Greg Myers, and he claims to know of a Florida judge who has stolen more money than all other crooked judges combined. And not just crooked judges in Florida. All judges, from all states, and throughout US history.
What's the source of the ill-gotten gains? It seems the judge was secretly involved with the construction of a large casino on Native American land. The Coast Mafia financed the casino and is now helping itself to a sizable skim of each month's cash. The judge is getting a cut and looking the other way. It's a sweet deal: Everyone is making money.
But now Greg wants to put a stop to it. His only client is a person who knows the truth and wants to blow the whistle and collect millions under Florida law. Greg files a complaint with the Board on Judicial Conduct, and the case is assigned to Lacy Stoltz, who immediately suspects that this one could be dangerous.
Dangerous is one thing. Deadly is something else.

Good story but disliked narrator
The book was very good but the narrator who otherwise did a great job made all the men sound exactly the same and it really threw off the relationship between the main character and each man... Just my opinion ... It took away from the story for me

Better
Def better than the very shallow Gray Mountain- still not as good as his old ones like The Broker but worth a listen.

Very Slow
I love Grisham, but found even the abridged version of this very slow and drawn out. I was also not overly impressed with the narrators.

Slow-paced. Predictable. Boring.
I am returning The Whistler without listening to the rest of it. I think I could pass a quiz on what happens next. I feel sad that this Grisham book bears little resemblance to his earlier classics, which I still enjoy reading, hearing, or watching on tv. I think his writing began to sag when he began to focus on the death penalty. I am apt to judge narrators by the standards set in the Baldacci and Silva novels, but she did okay; she didn't add any excitement to the story.

Terrible Narrator
Not a bad story but probably the worst narrator I have heard since listening to audiobooks. Returned it but currently reading the hardcover...

Little Disappointed??
I think the story could be very good but the narration is horrible!!! I am a huge Grisham fan and I feel I need to read the book to enjoy it fully!!
Not a good way to start with audiobooks for me.

Boring Slog
A well-told story about people who are hard to care about in a plot with only one twist — and that you can see coming for a country mile. Skip this book.

Didn't like the narrator
Great story, would be a definite page turner. Did not like the narrator, she used many of the same voices for the different characters in the book.

First Rate
Suspenseful, illuminating, believable, and very well read. Makes me want to listen to more Grisham. Also appreciate the low level of violence and that the real heroes were normal civil servants, not the usual fictional super stars.

Okay, but a little predictable.
The over story and narration was good.
But the narrator can't do male voices and shouldn't try, get another narrator for that. Her male voices are distracting.
