    Description

While out on a walk, Eleanor Trewynn, her niece Megan, and her neighbor Nick spot a young, half-drowned Indian man floating in the water. Delirious and concussed, he utters a cryptic message about his family being trapped in a cave and his mother dying. The young man, unconscious and unable to help, is whisked away to a hospital while a desperate effort is mounted to find the missing family in time.

The local police inspector presumes that they are refugees from East Africa, abandoned by the smugglers who brought them into England. While the Cornwall countryside is being scoured for the family, Eleanor herself descends into a dangerous den of smugglers in a desperate search to find the man responsible while there is still time.

    Really Enjoyed This

The author has written an enormous number of mysteries and I am on track to have read/listened to all of them. This is set in the early sixties in Cornwall, England in the UK. I t follows the adventures of an older woman, her dog, her niece a Police Sargent and colorful village characters. This is a mystery related to the shipping industry, Indian refugees from Africa, (you may need to brush up on colonial history to understand), and a man deranged by drink and a gambling addiction. The world building is great - you feel like you’ve gone back in time and over to Cornwall. This has a thoughtful look at issues society was grappling with namely, racism and sexism and was also entertaining.

    Slow and sleepy

Kinda slow and sleepy series, unlike Carola Dunn's other series. Not a fan of Pencarrow.

Drowning Man from India and Great History Lessons

While out for a walk, Detective Sergeant Megan Pencarrow jumps into the water to rescue a nearly drowned man of Indian descent. Barely conscious, he is able to tell Megan that his mother is dying and that his family is trapped in a cave, before the ambulance takes him away to the hospital. Megan's aunt, Eleanor Trewynn, retired from the home office after many years of service and traveling the world over, is full of wisdom and is a thorn in the side of the local constabulary 😂. Both Eleanor and Megan are determined to get to the root of the story told by the young Indian man and to find his family, despite the police's attempt to shut down the case. Eleanor's memory of the treatment of the Indian people during the time of English rule are some of the best parts of the story, as heartbreaking as they are. I love Eleanor and Megan's tenacity. For me, this is one of the best in the series.

    Is it over yet

Storyline drags towards the end. Not an attention keeper. Parts of the book offer hints of suspense but disappoint.

i love the elinore character ., I am hooked!

I just switched over after enjoying much of the Dalrymple series.
This is charming in a quite different way. A much more realistic lifestyle and several lovable mature characters. Not as overly light and sweet in style. The Cornwall locale is very intriguing and challenging with some sturdy characters to match. I absolutely love having older characters as well as interesting young ones , so still some romance, and a very good mixture.

This has such a wonderful cast of characters that I am totally hooked. The narrator is strong and clear. I will do the whole series.

Enjoyable series! Good for Agatha Christie fans

Finding a well-written and interesting mystery that doesn’t skew towards gore can be challenging. The Cornish series, and it’s delightful cast of characters, has been a great find. Not the same style as Agatha Christie, however it is likely to appeal to her fans. Light with bits of humor, worth a listen if you have a taste for cozy mysteries.

    Less mystery than “cozy thriller”

As with the previous novel in this series, it seems pretty clear who the culprit is from first appearance — or at least who the culprit’s sibling is. But what this lacks in clues, red herrings and alternate suspects, it makes up for with some moments of dramatic tension and even a chase scene, of sorts — even if at an “Aunt Nell” pace.
