    Description

Your mind is not built to make you happy; it's built to help you survive. So far, it's done a great job! But in the process, it may have developed some bad habits, like avoiding new experiences or scrounging around for problems where none exist. Is it any wonder that worry, bad moods, and self-critical thoughts so often get in the way of enjoying life?

Based in acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), The User's Guide to the Human Mind is a road map to the puzzling inner workings of the human mind, replete with exercises for overriding the mind's natural impulses toward worry, self-criticism, and fear, and helpful tips for acting in the service of your values and emotional well-being - even when your mind has other plans.

    Life changing

I've read many books on anxiety... this book drastically helped my anxiety and I continue to read it every time I need a little reminder or feel my anxiety coming back. It's amazing and well worth a read if your struggling with anxious thoughts. If I could only read one book the rest of my life... I'd be this book!!!!!!!

    "Red-pill" alert

I started listening then got interested in who the author is and googled him. All the results had videos with titles like "how feminism makes women undatable," "never date a real feminist," and "the virtues of masculine traits: be toxic." It turned me off immediately, since I just can't take someone seriously who's primary identity is built around gender equality being bad and my belief in it making me unlovable (this all a "real feminist" is btw, someone who believes men and women are of equal worth and deserve equal rights). I'm all about celebrating our differences and the positives of both masculinity and femininity, but that's clearly not his goal. I can't be taking life advice from anyone using slogans like "be toxic" in videos aimed at young men seeking guidance. He praises male aggression but warns guys about "volatile women" with freeze frames of a stereotype hysterical woman like it's a lobotomy ad. Maybe it's all just click bait titles but I'm not gonna waste my time finding out cause either way he lost my respect. Giving it 2 stars instead of one cause I imagine the kind of guy who is already deep into this mentality would at least benefit from hearing advice from a professional instead of a random internet forum. Just wish I never wasted my money

    Very repetitive

What would have made The User's Guide to the Human Mind better?

The central message is that our brains are designed to worry in order to keep us safe. This author repeats this same message over and over again in the entire book and it's incredibly boring. Do they assume us readers/listeners are dumb? If so, he really doesn't understand how the mind works.

Would you ever listen to anything by Shawn T. Smith again?

    hell no
