Description

It should have been a lovely English country-house weekend. But the unfortunate guest list is enough to exasperate a saint, and the host, Sir Arthur Billington-Smith, is an abusive wretch hated by everyone – from his disinherited son to his wife's stoic would-be lover. When Sir Arthur is found stabbed to death, no one is particularly grieved and no one has an alibi. The unhappy guests find themselves under the scrutiny of Scotland Yard's cool-headed Inspector Harding, who has solved tough cases before - but this time, the talented young inspector discovers much more than he's bargained for.

A perfect novel for Agatha Christie fans.

Any additional comments?

A great book for the Agatha Christie fans who want to read something else. Old English manners. A lovely book though it does have some slow bits. I enjoyed my first dive into Georgette Heyer.

Stayed up late to finish it!

If you like the "oldies" (Christie, Ngaio Marsh, Patricia Wentworth, etc) then this book will be a joy. It has all the standard form of a stately home gathering, where the murder is discreetly committed (reader not subjected to too much blood and gore), the group of relatives and friends forced to remain together until the denouement where the killer is finally revealed by the Scotland Yard detective, etc. True classic British country home mystery, that does not disappoint.

At first I thought there were too many characters to sort out, but Heyerdahl handles them so well, they are each quite memorable by the end of the book. This is about the death of Arthur Billington-Smith, a perfectly horrible and cruel man that everybody was secretly or openly happy to see dead. Which made deciding whom, among them all, hated him just enough more to find him threatening at a different level. Enter Scotland Yard, and even a bit of romance.

The narration is good, the story was a great cerebral puzzle, a Who-dunnit in the truest sense, and I enjoyed listening to every minute of it.

SLOW narration

the story was cute with a. really unbelievable ending, but OMG anyone else would have finished the story in under 7 hours. this narrator had a relatively pleasing voice but she read incredibly slowly.

A good listen to a comfortable story

This is an old-fashioned whodunit. The characters are as known to the listener as one's own parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and siblings. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable listen. Expertly narrated with quite well defined voices for each character. Perfect to recommend to your aging parents or grandparents. No sex, bad words, or other distasteful things.

Great story, great narration

Mystery was easy to suss out but pleasant all the same. Amusing dialogue and great personalities. And I disagree with other reviewers -- I loved Ulli Birve! She has a wonderful sense of characterization.

great story, with bad narration

This Georgette Heyer novel was a great mystery, in the tradition of the Golden Days of Detective Fiction (along with other classic novelists like Agatha Christie). Unfortunately the narrator was not great......while in some ways she allowed me to create great visuals in my brain for each character with her performance, in other ways her narration made listening very difficult. She seemed to hyper-enunciate every word, making things stilted and slow.

I think my next Georgette Heyer mystery will be in print.

Witty and Very English Mystery

This is a comfortable story with some fine exchanges of with. I only wish there were more but even so this is a fun read. I concentrated on the characters rather than discovering the murderer and I was not disappointed. This is a fun read.

Good classic mystery

Heyer isn't quite in the same league as Christie and Sayers, but she does write well plotted, clever mysteries that are still worth the read. Her characters are a bit over the top here, but still interesting and witty and worth getting to know.

The mystery itself is neither too obscure nor too simplistic. I figured out a key part, but not the actual killer until right at the end (about the same time her detective did). As a long time mystery reader, that is always a plus for me.

The romance (and Heyer cannot resist tossing in a little romance) is silly, but unobtrusive to the story.

I think the narrator does a fine job. She isn't perfection, but I was never dropped out of the story and never had problems knowing who was speaking, so I was happy with it.

Klassiker

Vor sehr vielen Jahren hab ich das Buch (wahrscheinlich erst auf Deutsch) gelesen, mir dann in England gekauft und freue mich sehr, es jetzt auf Englisch gehört zu haben. Sehr empfehlenswert
