The Understory: A Female Environmentalist in the Land of the Midnight Sun
She risked her life to protect the natural world, only to discover that nature was not her greatest danger.
In this powerful memoir, Michelle Schuman takes listeners from the savanna of Zimbabwe to the bamboo forests of the Virunga Mountains and the oil-soaked shores of Prince William Sound. Along the way, she witnesses unforgettable scenes of beauty, violence, and survival: a grieving baby elephant beside its slaughtered mother, the touch of a mountain gorilla deep in the wild, and seals struggling through the toxic devastation of the Exxon Valdez oil spill.
But the dangers of remote wilderness were only part of the story. While fighting to defend fragile ecosystems, Michelle also faced intimidation, loss, and the harsh reality of a world determined to control and silence women like her.
The Understory is a gripping true story of courage, resilience, and fierce purpose. For listeners drawn to memoir, nature writing, and stories of women who refuse to be broken, this is an unforgettable journey through trauma, survival, and the fight to protect what matters most.
