In Clark Ashton Smith’s The Uncharted Isle, Mark Irwin, first mate of the freighter Auckland, finds himself in a place that defies everything he knows about the world. Beyond a sheltered lagoon stands an ancient city whose people are consumed by a baffling problem. They study faded maps, consult astronomical instruments, and search the heavens for answers. Yet none of them acknowledges the stranger walking among them.
The island’s architecture suggests an impossibly distant past. Its vessels appear to have weathered thousands of years. Even the stars have shifted into unfamiliar arrangements. As Irwin explores, he begins to suspect that the island’s inhabitants have become separated from the world they once knew.
But something else troubles this forgotten civilization. Within a shadowy temple stands a monstrous idol, and the islanders’ desperate search for answers may lead them somewhere their ancient instruments cannot guide them.
The Uncharted Isle combines the atmosphere of a lost-world adventure with the unsettling possibilities of cosmic horror. Smith creates a place where the familiar laws of nature seem to have failed, leaving one sailor to confront a question no navigator could answer: How do you escape a place that should not exist?
Clark Ashton Smith (1893–1961) was born in Long Valley, California, and spent most of his life in the Auburn area of the Sierra Nevada foothills. Largely self-educated, he developed an extraordinary vocabulary through voracious reading and began his literary career as a poet. His first poetry collection, The Star-Treader and Other Poems, appeared in 1912, when he was just nineteen.
