Description

If she has her way…

Willa Davis is wrangling puppies when Keane Winters stalks into her pet shop with frustration in his chocolate-brown eyes and a pink bedazzled cat carrier in his hand. He needs a kitty sitter, stat. But the last thing Willa needs is to rescue a guy who doesn't even remember her....

He'll get nothing but coal in his stocking.

Saddled with his great-aunt's feline from hell, Keane is desperate to leave her in someone else's capable hands. But in spite of the fact that he's sure he's never seen the drop-dead gorgeous pet shop owner before, she seems to be mad at him.

Unless he tempers "naughty" with a special kind of nice...

Willa can't deny that Keane's changed since high school: He's less arrogant, for one thing - but he doesn't even remember her. How can she trust him not to break her heart again? It's time to throw a coin in the fountain, make a Christmas wish - and let the mistletoe do its work.

Not letting your past control your future

What made the experience of listening to The Trouble with Mistletoe the most enjoyable?

I loved the interaction the two characters had plus the twist of humor.

What did you like best about this story?

That you could really feel the struggle both Will and Keane had with opening themselves up to each other.

Have you listened to any of Karen White’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the first performance I have listened to of Karen White's.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I really felt sad for both Keane and Willa with the childhoods they had but I also laughed at the twist of humor in this book.

Any additional comments?

I absolutely loved this book! Very well written and the narrator's voice really pulled you into the story.

Willa and Keane grew on me :)

Listened/Read for Fun (Audible)
Overall Rating: 4.25
Story Rating: 4.00
Character Rating: 4.50

Audio Rating: 4.50 (not part of the overall rating)

Quick Thoughts: So I admit in the beginning I was a little annoyed with Willa and Keane. Willa because she expected him to remember something and Keane because he was just so freaking stubborn. These usually end up being some of my favorite types of stories and this one definitely did. I am glad they came around and their HEA was great!!!!!!!

Audio Thoughts:

Narrated by Karen White/ Length: 10 hrs and 1 min

Karen and Jill make a great combination! Karen really gets Jill's characters and can bring them to life with the right balance of spunk and emotion. I really do recommend this on audio.

Part of my Read It, Rate It, File It, DONE!

two of my favorites

I love Jill Shalvis books. I love Karen White narrating. Put them together and it's a great time.
I really enjoyed these characters. Their ups and downs are believable. The story has good pacing and enjoyable secondary characters. Petunia (aka Pita) is a lovely typical cat and I am glad she was given so much personality.
This book is a fun time mixed with some heartfelt emotion time. Enjoy!

A Fun Holiday Story

It is that time of the year when I love all things holiday, Hallmark specials, books (old and buy new ones). The Trouble with Mistletoe by Jill Shalvis is the first book I purchased for the 2019 Christmas season when I received a sale notice for the book and audio.

Willa Davis, pet shop owner sells pet supplies, pet sitter, performs pet wedding ceremonies, and helps friends. Willa is a successful entrepreneur now, but her young life was a challenge. Her mother is an alcoholic. When she was drinking, Willa was placed in foster homes. During one of those rough times, Keane Winters stood her up for the high school Sadie Hawkins dance.

Keane Winters is a successful house renovator. He flips houses. From the outside, it looks like he has everything going for him. He didn’t have the best childhood. His parents never approved of his life choices. Keane’s aunt asks him to care for her cat while she can’t. Keane and the cat don’t get along at all. He stops by Willa’s shop for help. Seeing Keane stirs all those old rejection feelings and begins some funny, sweet, and emotional moments.

The Trouble with Mistletoe is a charming holiday story with two characters that have a lot to work through to get to the point of trust needed for a relationship. Willa has a good heart, willing to help anyone in need. At the same time, she has a long history of making poor choices in her love life. In many ways Keane is the male version. He is a good friend, boss, and even though he doesn’t see it, a good son. He is a one-night-stand guy after a relationship went bad in college.

The support characters are excellent additions to the story. They add a lot to the story and stir my interest in them. The story unfolds at a good pace with great dialogue, and some funny moments that set the tone. The push-pull lasted a little too long for me even though I understand the reason. In that way it is a lot like a Hallmark movie, but the long push-pull is easier to endure for an hour or two, but a little tough for a day’s reading. Overall, I like it. I’m going to read some of the other books in the series for more about the characters.

Karen White does a good job bringing the story to life. Her voice is pleasant and easy on the ears. She adds emotion where appropriate but not over the top.

Another perfect book

Jill did again with this one. Loved seeing how Willa finally gives in to her feelings and not just those of everyone else. Keane is a great character with a lot of baggage but finally realizes what he can have if he only lets himself. Would highly recommend this book.

The Dudette has Tude

Where does The Trouble with Mistletoe rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Good but not author's best. See Rumor Has It and Then Came You as they are author's best and are re listens when you need a great laugh or pick me up. This author always makes you feel good

Who was your favorite character and why?

Petunia, pure meows of laughter

Which scene was your favorite?

All the puppy and cat scenes, and Elle/ Archer. Their story is the best book in this trilogy.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Karen White reader is the best. See her in Julie James series as that is her all time best. My fave Love Irresistibly, not to be missed.

Any additional comments?

Note I do use the new 1.25x speed to match the author's intent
Please advise if this was helpful to you

Disappointed

This turned out to be my least favorite Jill Shalvis book. Combining that with the poor narration makes for a disappointing listen.

Bored.

What could Jill Shalvis have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The story dragged. There are some weird phrases she uses again and again that distract, especially in an audio book. "[character] went brows up" is one. Who says this?

Would you be willing to try another one of Karen White’s performances?

No. She has a tendency to drawl the final words of her sentences in a weird, distracting way. She also voiced Willa in a way that was almost like the "Sexy Baby" girl from 30 Rock.

Not a great audio, I did not enjoy.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No, the performance was not good. The strong character had a Minnie Mouse voice.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

What wasn't in Minnie Mouse was monotone.

Was The Trouble with Mistletoe worth the listening time?

no, I didn't finish it.
