TO THE PUBLIC, "THE SHOT" IS A TRIUMPH. TO GUY MANTOOTH, IT'S EVIDENCE.
Thirty years ago, wildlife photographer Guy Mantooth took a photograph that changed everything. The image captured a bird previously believed extinct—the last known member of its species. It became iconic. Exhibited around the world. Reproduced in books, magazines, museums, documentaries, and calendars. Critics hailed it. Environmentalists embraced it.
Guy called it a mistake.
Now approaching old age and living alone with a reputation he never wanted, Guy finds himself trapped inside a story everyone thinks they understand. As the thirtieth anniversary approaches, journalists, former friends, and eager admirers gather to celebrate THE SHOT. Guy is forced to confront a question he has spent three decades trying to avoid:
What if the greatest achievement of his life was also his greatest regret?
By turns funny, melancholy, absurd, and deeply human, THE SHOT is a novel about memory, guilt, fame, obsession, and the stories people tell themselves when the truth proves too difficult to accept.
For listeners who enjoy literary fiction with dark humor in the tradition of Joseph Heller, Kurt Vonnegut, and John Irving.
