Description

She’s gone in search of happy memories. But was her idyllic childhood in India an illusion?

After the Second World War, Libby Robson leaves chilly England for India, and the childhood home where she left her heart - and her beloved father, James - fourteen years ago.

At first Libby is intoxicated by India’s vibrant beauty: the bustle of Calcutta, the lush tea gardens of Assam. But beneath the surface a rebellion is simmering: India is on the brink of Partition, and the days of British rule are numbered. As the owner of a tea plantation, James embodies the hated colonial regime, and Libby finds herself questioning her idealised memories - particularly when she meets the dashing freedom fighter Ghulam Khan.

As Partition looms, life in India becomes precarious for Libby, James and even Ghulam. And when James reveals a shameful family secret, Libby is forced to question her past - and her future.

Fantastic!

Love this series, excellent narrator. I'm swapping between this and another series she narrates - she's superb. Get your tissues out though!

Love all of this series! Book 4 was a bit too long

I truly have read each and every book from Janet MacLeod Trotter..and 💕 LOVED each one..but ‘The Secrets of the Tea Garden (India Tea Book 4) was just a little difficult in explaining the past characters to where we were now.

It took me about 45 minutes to try and connect the characters here to the last Book. Book 3 was released in 2016 and this novel was released Nov 2018...that’s a long time when we were not really introduced to new characters, but ones that were barely mentioned in the other 3 books. Those installments were literally generational, as was this one briefly, but we were close to those characters and knew about their stories and the children they sired. It was just a tad different here. Once I started reading/listening then the other family’s began to emerge into the story and I couldn’t put it down!

Book 4 basically starts after WWII when India was becoming a nation by itself and turmoil was all around. India hated every Brit, whether born in India or not. Between the turmoil, you have Libby, who is Tilly & James Robson’s daughter..for the life of me I couldn’t remember any of them in any of the other books. James was the cousin of Wesley Robson, who was married to Clarissa & died in the last book. James is going through a terrible time in India due to something that happened with Logen in 1899. Libby is still living in the U.K. & decides to move back to India to be with her father, and the country she was born in. Yet the country she remembered no longer exists...*sorry NO SPOILERS*...You’ll have to read to remember the past and put everything together! Yes Clarissa comes in the middle as well as Adela and the end *hint* is ALMOST identical to Book 1 *hint finished 😁*

There is love found and love lost..sadness, (definitely tissues will be used towards the end) death and a new life. I 🥰 Sarah Coomes narration from all of the series..and I truly, truly hope..Ms. Trotter, please don’t stop at Book 4..you have new generations to build on, and I’ll wait another 2 years if necessary, because “Tea Garden Series” will always be remembered by everyone as one of their best, authentic, fiction/non fiction (due to real events) that we the readers will always read and re read over and over and over...
Thank you ❤️

Tea garden series

I loved the entire series! Ms Trotter’s characters grabbed my attention and I didn’t want their story to end. This book’s period is after WWII, leading to the Partition of India. I hope Ms Trotter continues the family saga with a book 5. Sarah Coomes performance was excellent.
