Description
None of the Same Sweet Girls are really girls anymore, and none of them have actually ever been that sweet. But the story of this spirited group of six Southern women, who have been holding biannual reunions ever since they were together in college, is nothing short of compelling.
The story of the Same Sweet Girls is told by three of the women who suddenly face middle age and major life changes. First Lady Julia Stovall, the perfect political wife, is torn between loyalty to her husband, the governor of Alabama, and an unwelcome attraction to his bodyguard. The fun-loving former jock Lanier Sanders, who always finds a way to mess up her life, has done it yet again. And Corrine Cooper, a renowned gourd artist, battles her controlling ex-husband for the affection of her estranged son.
On an island every summer and in the mountains every fall, the Same Sweet Girls come together to share their stories. When one of the group faces the most difficult challenge of her life, the novel builds to an almost unbearably powerful conclusion, one of the most memorable in current fiction. Without a touch of sentimentality, Cassandra King writes of the way close friends can help each other through even the most cataclysmic life events. Both heartbreaking and hilarious, The Same Sweet Girls will touch, move, and inspire listeners to cherish their own lifelong friendships.

Delivers What it Promises
With a title such as "The Same Sweet Girls" there is a certain expectation and this book meets and exceeds that. The narrator's perfect lilt kept me interested and the light and sweet story that followed a group of women for just about 40 years kept me both entertained and interested.
The Same Sweet Girls are a half dozen wonderfully detailed characters that you will come to love and perhaps side with one more than the other. I can see myself in each of the girls as well as everyone I know.
This book won't move you to greatness but the story soothes the soul and reminds you to concentrate on what is important. I felt like a child being read a story by my favorite aunt when I was listening. It's the perfect escape!
Some of it feels a bit like a package too neatly presented and in another novel that might ruin it but in this case it adds to the comfort of the book. The Same Sweet Girls delivers what it promises!

Huh?
What a waste of time! I'd like to count how many times the word, "gourd" was used in this book! Seriously - gourds? The last few pages were laughable as the dying woman gave each of her college buddies a little gourd and then left them with instructions for the disbursement of her ashes in her "special" gourd, which each of them caressed as though it were a newborn baby.
I thought I was reading the redneck version of Sinclair Lewis' "Main Street," except for the fact that this wasn't a satire.

Quick, fun
Wasn’t a fan of the southern accent when I started it but otherwise good, easy listen.

great story but..
the story tells the tale of five women and their friendship struggles. it's emotional but uplifting. the narrator though.. fake southern and she should have learned how to pronounce words before recording.

Abridged!?
Nowhere in the description does it say the book has been gouged. It would be a sweet story if I hadn't read the book several times, but they cut out so much there's no character development. what author would allow this? I'm saddened by this. it was one of my all- time favorite books.

Same Sweet Girls
Very disappointed . Can’t believe I’m finished listening. I’m southern and don’t like a fake southern accent for starters. Felt like these women didn’t really like each other a lot. Liked the gourds. Story just didn’t nothing for me.

Loved It!!!!
What a wonderful story of friendship, love and heartbreak. I could see traits of each of my friends in the characters and could relate to each one. You will quickly be drawn into the lives of the characters by the charming voice of Patricia Kalember. I had a hard time putting this down until I had finished. I loved it!!
