The searing, postapocalyptic novel destined to become Cormac McCarthy's masterpiece. A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don't know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food-and each other. The Road is the profoundly moving story of a journey. It boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which the father and his son, "each the other's world entire," are sustained by love. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation.©2006 Cormac McCarthy (P)2006 Recorded Books Coming of Age Genre Fiction Sagas Science Fiction

Reviews

"McCarthy's prose retains its ability to seduce...and there are nods to the gentler aspects of the human spirit." (The New Yorker)
"One of McCarthy's best novels, probably his most moving and perhaps his most personal...Every moment of The Road is rich with dilemmas that are as shattering as they are unspoken...McCarthy is so accomplished that the reader senses the mysterious and intuitive changes between father and son that can't be articulated, let alone dramatized...Both lyric and savage, both desperate and transcendent, although transcendence is singed around the edges...Tag McCarthy one of the four or five great American novelists of his generation." (Los Angeles Times Book Review)

Very poetic passages and the story draws you in. Quite dark but that can be OK if that’s what you want/expect. Would have appreciated more backstory about the main adult character as well as how the situation developed.

Excellent narration, does as much justice to the poetic passages as to the character voices.

Poetic but dark

Dur. Mais poignant. Une relation unique et indestructible. Un récit fort. À lire. Absolument.

Merveilleux ouvrage

Stories that carry the light for us in the darkest of darkness are a blessing for those who have the courage to walk through them. It’s such a beautiful story of hope , no matter what.

Dark and brilliant
