    Description

In this timely audiobook, Carl Trueman analyzes the development of the sexual revolution as a symptom - rather than the cause - of the human search for identity.

    Exceptional

Loved it. Extremely useful for anyone, especially a christian to see how the social imaginary in the west has devealoped and grown to the point where transgenderism became plausible. That doesn't mean it's an accurate view of the self, or reality but Carl shows how the self has been redefined by the likes of Jack Rossaue, Sigmund Freud, Friedriech Nietzche, Darwin and other modern deconstructionist/feminist/surrealist thinkers. Our modern view of the self which we all to some extent have adopted has a history and Carl shows how it came to be. Read this book, I can't do it justice. Carl also does a great job as a narrarator, it is his book but he does have an interesting british voice and his experience as a professor/pastor/speaker helps him describe complex ideas and concepts. This belongs on the shelf of every teacher, especially teachers in the Church.

    Thoughtful, historic, helpful.

Carl Trueman thoughtfully engages with a culture that Christians would rather insult and mock than dialog with. His grounding of modern culture and the ‘self’ in historic thoughts, persons, and trends allows him to give insights into our culture that I have missed and you will probably will too if you don’t listen to/read this book.

    A must read

This book is a must read for Christians today. As a lay pastor and construction worker the topics and historical analysis are both informative and instructive as I navigate a host of sentiments and assumptions I deal with on a daily basis in both my spheres of work, both personally and with others. As a father of young children, the principles layer out will be helpful for me as I seek to minimize the effects of the imbibed cultural milieu, and raise strong, rooted children who understand not just what the believe but how and why they believe it.

The Rosetta Stone of Political and Social Discourse

First, Carl R. Truman is an EXCELLENT reader for this book! It was a beautiful listen.

Second, this book is the definitive work outlining the underlying assumptions upon which much of our political and social conflicts arise. It is an invaluable resource to guide those who wish to understand the point of view of those who are deconstructing history, moral behavior, values, definitions, and traditions. I finally understand the world in which we live, not from the standpoint of those critical of the social upheaval of our day, but through the writings of those who are willing participants and leaders in the current societal deconstruction. Truman draws connections between the most influential ideas of the last 200 years and so presents a complete and sequential narrative upon which we may understand the present.

I highly recommend this book and have purchased both the Audible and Kindle versions of it. Along with Live Not by Lies, this work is a must read for all who wish to truly understand and endure the times in which we now live.

    Rarified air

This book is unbelievable in its scope and breathtaking in its analysis. It’s not a “churchy” or religious book even though written from the perspective of a religious person. I deeply appreciate the fair and honest ways in which the author treats all sides on the issue of the modern self and our sexuality. Very well done.

    A Real Eye Opener

I never thought I would have any interest in, or any understanding of, the likes of Rousseau, Marx, Freud, Reiff, and others. and I didn't ever think I would be able to follow a 400-page book that used words like lacuna, adumbate, and iconoclasm, but Trueman makes all of this possible and accessible. I'm so glad my pastor recommended this book to me. It has opened my eyes to what has happened in our culture and why. The hour is later than any of us knew, and I'm so glad I understand how it got here, because it helps me know how to live in light of it as I seek to follow Christ.

    Should be required reading

Extremely helpful in expanding one's understand if why the worldview of the Western world became what it is today. A truly fascinating look at the history and evolution of the modern view of sexuality and gender.
