Family

Any additional comments?

When starting this I felt a little lost and thinking this was part of another series that explained it a little better. As I continued to read I found this to be turn as the author talks about other storylines. It took me a little while to catch up but soon it all fell into place.

Valerie Gilbert did a great job on the narration. She gives a very smooth listen with wonderful character voice. She goes give wonderful emotion and you can tell what each are feeling. Her characters voices were great you did not have any trouble telling who was talking. I did enjoy her many character voices you could always tell who was talking and just what was on their mind. I found no background or any places where the volume was higher or lower at the beginning of a chapter. You could not tell if any breaks were taken the audio was a smooth clean lesson. Her male voices were a good as her female ones. I really enjoyed her voice and the feel she gave to the read.

The family comes together after the mother has a stroke to celebrate Ronald and Becky's Wedding anniversary. They also have to come to terms with Becky’s recent stroke. The family are overcompensating which leave her feeling suffocated. For those of you that have read the other series the author lets you get caught up on each family member going over pass struggles. I really thought it was an emotional read but I kind of felt left out. I would recommend you reading the other books about this family I feel if I had I would have enjoyed it more. I am sure once you do you will totally enjoy this read. It was well worth the listen just to get to know the narrator.

True to life

This celebration of family is a culmination of the other Friessen books. While I have not yet read them, the story is a true depiction of family life. We are confronted at first with the stroke of Becky, and just coming home from rehabilitation is ready to have her boys, daughter-in-laws and grandchildren surrounding her to help celebrate her anniversary with Rodney. The three sons each have a wife, each with their own struggles. I found this refreshing, the book is honest and gritty with the problems that each of the couples face and how they interact with each other. I do think this should not be the preface for the series though, knowing the backgrounds from the other books would have been helpful in understanding the depth of characters better.

Valerie Gilbert narrates this book with her incredible versatility. She is able to take a story like this and give each character it's own voice, easily discernible when listening. From the stroke victim of Becky and her difficulty of speaking all the way to the children's voices, her talent comes forth letting you feel the pain, angst and love of this family.

Book 1

Any additional comments?

I like all the little glimpses that The Reunion gave into the Friessen clan. This book gives a real look into what makes relationships work, the good, the bad, the ugly. And it shows the strength and love that comes from a family together.

The Reunion

This was my first book by this author and narrator and the both did an amazing job with this story. From the beginning Becky draws you in. You may feel great compassion for her since she is recovering from a stroke. But don't let that fool you this woman is stronger than that stroke. She has amazing strength and her mind is sharp! She is a wonderful character! If you are just starting the series, like I am, you get a bit of back story on each character. You do feel in some areas like you need a bit more info, but that would be wasted on veterans of the series. Which I now look forward to! Great story with real life issues!

Feels like the middle

Any additional comments?

this story starts off almost in what should be the middle of the book. we meet Becky who has had a stroke and the family that surrounds her and tries to help her. I think we are missing very valuable information since we never really got an explanation of the characters we just jumped into their lives. I wonder if these Were Somehow marked wrong and listed this book is the first in the series. it was an entertaining family dynamic, but I felt like we were seriously missing something. the only reason I didn't stop this book was because of the narrator, she did a fantastic job bringing each of the characters alive and keeping you entertained throughout the entire story. I will read other books in the series to see if maybe we go back in time and get some answers.

The Reunion

After the matriarch of the Friessens family has a stroke, the entire family comes together. Rodney and Becky are to renew their wedding vows, and each of their kids, their spouses, and their children are all there, along with their nephew. This was my first Friessens listen, so it was quite an introduction to the entire clan.

Lorhainne Eckhart has created a very large, realistic family. After one short book, I can already sense the connections between all of the extended family members. I’m looking forward to experiencing the rest of the books.

Valerie Gilbert did a fantastic job with this narration. There were so many different characters and their different personalities and emotions came through loud and clear.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.

Boring

I could not get through this book. It is too hum drum boring for me. The narrator is good and the writing is good. I felt the same way about The Bridges of Madison County and Gone Girl, which were both huge hits, so don't use my review as a reason not to read this book.
