    Description

    Brought to you by Penguin.

The Union-Congregate war rages onward, and the Union's premier fighter pilots, the Homo Eridanus, start encountering deadly resistance from strange pilots on the Congregate side. Among wreckage, they find that new Congregate pilots aren't human, but Homo quantus, with strange wiring and AI connections.

At the same time, the Puppets come to the Union with offers of an alliance for a dangerous price: the rescue of the geneticist Antonio Del Casal who is a captive at Venus, with over a hundred Homo quantus.

The only one who might be able to break through the Congregate defences at Venus is a con man who has given up his profession.

    Terrible Audio

I'll admit, it's hard to give an unbiased review of the story aspects, because the recording of this audiobook is so terrible. The narrators speech is extremely bass heavy, and his voice has a whispery quality to it which makes it very hard to hear just about anything clearly. Add to that his accents of varous characters (spanish, french, indian) and there are a number of exchanges which are basically unintelligable. Additionally, at times words just seem to fall out of the recording, like his microphone skipped out on him from time to time.

I liked the first two books in the series quite a bit, and I think I like the story of this one too. But I'm going to have to re-experience it in written form because it's impossible to really enjoy the book with such terrible audio.

    Mumblemumblemumble...What???

Apparently the narrator believes that women always whisper and a French accent means speaking rapidly and dropping most of the consonants. Or, as spoken in this book..."apparunleezeenarraybeleezatwimnulwaizwispanafrenazenmeespeeingrapileeanroppeemosofzeeconsonan"

Hours and hours of straining to hear and understand the characters is just torture. I have no idea what is going on in this book. Turning up the volume does not work, because other characters YELL all the time.

Sounds like a bad zoom call

Excellent narrator, brilliant author, lousy cheap disappointing audible product. Avoid this frustration, read the book.

    Disappointing

What the author does to main character is appalling and I don't mean physically.

I mostly just came for the Vincent Stills...

But only mostly. I can't give this book a full review without massive spoilers. At least one of my favorite non-Stills characters died, but I don't know for sure exactly how many.

I got a dose of Stills to tide me over until the next book, I guess. Will there be a next book? I think my opinion of this book will depend on what happens in the next one.

In summary, I don't know what to make of this one. It was not what I expected, but regardless of where we ended up, I suppose I did enjoy the journey. If you liked the previous two, of course you'll want to get this one. If you haven't already read or listened to the first two books in this series, by all means, start with "The Quantum Magician" or you won't get the full experience.

Biased because Quantum Magician was so damn good..

First let me say it is a let down from the first Bellasarius book, but it is good. It's not a book i needed to get back to, like if i drove five minutes to the gas station for petrol for the lawn mower, I would be happy because that's five minutes I could listen to the book type. I found myself where I didn't have a preference if I was listening to it or not. Now on the other hand Mr. Smith is absolutely one of The best if not The Best Narrator performing, simply amazing... plus Derek finds some clever sci-fi concepts that he shares with us which let's face it, that's our meth, he creates, and walks through the process of creating Anti-Iron, nice. So all and all its worth the credit and Pretty Good (3 stars)

    Half a book

Felt like half a book. A lot of the “in-between” parts of “spiritual bliss” or ranting. Little actual story or character development or even much of a plot.

story too big for the characters

First, the audio quality of this recording leaves much to be desired: volume too low and sounds like it was recorded inside a metal box. Possibly T Ryder Smith used his own home recording studio. It needs an upgrade.

The story is somewhat similar to that of the Quantum Magician, though the stakes are much higher. Lacks the fun quirkiness of that book. Although all the characters from the previous books appear, I felt that they were portrayed with less depth than previously. Perhaps because the story is so big and there is so much action that there was no time for character development. Whatever the reason, that aspect wasn't as good as I would have liked.

There is a lot of carnage in this episode. Who the good guys are in this novel is hard to say. One would think it is our two favorite homo quantus, but they are responsible for the aforementioned carnage. On the other hand, the Conglomerate uses some foul tactics, so does that allow us to see them as the bad guys? If you read House of Styx, then you might be more inclined to think of the Congregate as the good guys. And they do have a pretty solid rationale behind their actions. The banks seem to be the only undisputed bad guys, but maybe Kunsken will make them look better in the next novel.

    Disappointing.

The first two books of this series were really fun, incredibly thought-provoking, adventurous futuristic twists of the "Heist" story-type with all kinds of creative science tossed in.

    Then there's this book.

I don't know what happened with the author, but everything that made the first 2 books fun was massively toned down in this book and replaced with the most morose, dark, borderline sadistic perspective of life and war. Which on one hand I recognize as being incredibly realistic, also hugely detracts from listening to and enjoying what's supposed to be a fictional story for entertainment.

On top of that, the flow and style of the 2 major characters, Bel and Cassandra, change dramatically in this book. The things that make them who they are, the next-level logic and ability to process information and approach situations in a unique manner completely disappears in this book, to be replaced with the most frustrating stereotypically short sided stupid decisions which are completely antithetical to how they approached literally everything in the former books. Plus these new terrible decisions lead to some impressively unpleasant torture scenes and "just kill them all" choices which made it worse. By the end of the book, I didn't even recognize them as the characters I loved so much from the first 2 books.

In the end, it left me feeling empty and despondent. I don't know if that was the author's intention, but that was most definitely the result. I'll likely delete this series from my library so I don't even have to contemplate it ever again, and I'll certainly avoid anything they do in the future, which is unfortunate because again, the first two books to the series are amazing...

Just to denote the one good thing: T Ryder Smith is an absolutely incredible narrator! Definitely one of my all time favorites at this point, absolutely within the top 5, and I'll be on the lookout for other series he narrates. Cheers to him for the width and breadth of depth he added to all of the characters and the story as a whole!
