    Description

Every country is built on revolution.

The warden. Soren is a nameless, stateless man, tasked with keeping watch over Maricol’s borders. He isn’t meant for politics, only dealing with the dead. His past was buried in the poison fields, but after a fateful encounter with a prince, Soren comes to realize he can’t keep what magic burns inside him hidden forever.

The prince. Vanya Sa’Liandel was the spare who survived the Houses’ murderous games to become the Imperial crown prince of Solaria. He has a duty to his country, but he’ll owe his life to the wardens. Payment of any kind is costly, especially when he’s at risk of losing his heart to the man who saved his life.

The cog. Caris Dhemlan hears the siren song of clarion crystals better than anyone in Ashion. That skill for inventing has enriched her bloodline, but it’s who she can become that will ultimately entangle her with the Clockwork Brigade.

The princess. Eimarille Rourke should have been raised to be queen of one country; instead, she is prisoner of another. Guided by a star god, Eimarille bides her time in a gilded cage, spinning a political web to gain a throne and start a war the world isn’t ready for.

From the author who brought you the Soulbound series comes a queer steampunk-inspired epic fantasy romance.

    Great character voices...

    3.5 stars for the narrator

I think Gary does a great job with the character voices. He's created different voices for each and uses numerous accents, He brings emotions to the characters. I just didn't love his reading outside of the character voices. It left a lot to be desired. Overall though he did a solid job.

    4 stars for the story

The Rourke's are a family with star fire/ magic in their blood. What I get is that the Star Gods have all chosen sides with the different Countries of Maricol. The inferno essentially was the burning down and destruction of Amari. The point of it was to rid the world of the Rourke family. However, the three children were taken by different Gods and placed where they wanted them.
-Eimarille was placed with King Bernard of of Daijal
-Alasandair aka Soren was placed with the wardens who are neutral parties and protect the border of the countries from revenants.
-Caris in Cosian with Portia and her husband to be raised as their child.

The only Rourke known to be alive is Eimarille. Alassandair (Soren) is believed to be dead and Caris was not even known to have been born.

In the first part they are multiple POVs that get a bit confusing but it is all played out to set up the story. As the story progresses the POV break down to a few main POVs and from there, things get better. There are time jumps the first is a 15 year jump.

From this time jump everyone has aged and have been living the lives they were placed into. There is still a lot going on but the main point is a power grab. The king of Daijal wants to do so by marriage through Eimarille and his son Wesley. He believes doing this will give him power over Amari which will then help him establish power over other countries. But like I said there are other powers, through the Gods, at hand and they don't necessarily all want the same thing.

There is a group called the Clockwork Brigade and their main job is to keep Amari running and to prevent Eimarille from taking the throne. Instead, they want to have the youngest Rourke in power.
Basically, there is a fight for it. It is all really interesting. Like I said power over the Countries of Maricol seem to be the gist of it.
Eimarille doesn't seem like a very good person. Girl is a plotter.

I would say there is romance in the book but it is not really what I consider a romance novel.

    Honovi/Blaine (MM)- They are married.
Vanya/Soren (MM)- They came together after Soren saved Vanya's life. They may be my favorite.
    Eimarille/Terilyn (FF) -Secret lovers.
    Caris/Nathaniel (FM)-Young and blossoming.

I liked most of what was shown with these relationships. I am so intrigued as to what will happen next. Vanya/Soren may be my favorite but Honovi/Blaine are not far behind. I really want to see what happens with Caris/Nathaniel especially because of the events towards the end.

Overall a very interesting beginning to this Saga. This author's story telling and world building skills are impeccable. I could use book 2 now!

    Amazing!!

Wow! This audiobook is really great!! the book have so much information and I’m a little confused because the book have so many POV’s, But they are needed to understand everything that is going on with characters and their stories.

I like the story, everyone have something to say and it’s an important part of this journey that is fill of betrayal, secrets, assassination attempts, family secrets, revenge and love. The main characters each one of them have being through a very hard path, all of them are walking a path that some else choose for them.

Every chapter in a different pov and sometime they were months or years later…but the story really was intriguing and have you on edge on the last chapters, I definitely I enjoy the audiobook so much Gary Furlong did an amazing job narrating this book! Soren voice, so dreamy! I definitely want to know what will happen in the next book!

    Too Much Going On

This story was enjoyable, however it has too many characters to keep up with. These aren't minor characters that only pop in so often. These are major characters you need to keep track of. It makes it had to form any connection with them. The story itself was interesting. I loved the world and how it was set up. The politics weren't anything new. This happens in the real world so how the governing bodies operated wasn't anything new. The only thing I didn't like much was the "Star Gods". That whole nonsense of them influencing the citizen but not really helping when they are prayed to really got under my skin.
Gary's performance of all characters was amazing. He was able to give them all distinctions that made it easier to keep track of them.
All in all this was an ok story. If you a fan of steampunk and political intrigue this is for you.

    Buckle down

Gary Furlong's narration of this story was just amazing. Great accents and differentiation in voices. I enjoyed listening to him. All that being said, you HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION. This is not something you can listen to in the background. There is soooo much going on. Hailey Turner does an amazing job of building this new world and there are four couples that we follow through several years of change. It's just so engrossing. Definitely want to see how this continues and looking forward to the next installment.

    Wow! What a story!

Many times I love listening to audiobooks while going about chores etc. There’s a lot going on in this book and it’s told via many POVs so I feel like I couldn’t get distracted for a minute or I lost what’s going on in the story. Turner has created a massive world with lots of history between the factions and tribes and killing that has led to where the book begins - right in the middle of a coup. Pay very close attention as all the hints as all the information you need to follow who’s who and where loyalties lie are presented here before there’s a significant time jump. There are all different families fighting and killing for the throne (à la GoT) and star gods are manipulating things both in front of and behind the scenes. If you read the prequel ‘An Emporium of Hearts’, you’ll be happy to know we see some familiar faces. Book 1 ends one one heck of a cliffhanger. Dying for more!

Gary Furlong does a fabulous job on all the different accents via a huge cast of characters and I never found myself questioning who was talking in a scene. And what I really love is that Turner has given a POV to the antagonists of the story and we get to see the motivations behind their choices. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this audiobook.

Interesting Story, Good Start to a New Series

I enjoyed this story a lot. It reminded me of The Accursed Kings series by French author Maurice Druon I read growing up, full of royal intrigue poisonings, plotting to kill and betrayals. This book has number of important characters and it was confusing at first to remember who belongs to what family and which house, by the second half I was enjoying all that was happening and had my favorites I was rooting for. This story has several very interesting characters, and I am exited to read more about each of them in the next book, but my most favorites are Soren and Vanya. I loved every chapter with them in it. Narrator did a good job with different voices, and I heard his work on other books, this was not my favorite performance by him. Overall this was a good listening experience and I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

    I need book 2 now!

I'm exceptionally hard on books. So many don't come close to meeting my criteria for a really good book. This one came really close.

First for the one thing that took it from a 5-star story to.a 4-star story. There were, quite honestly, too many people and too many houses to keep track of. I'm talking WAY too many. The main characters I remembered, but the lesser ones were hard to recall when they would suddenly pop up again, or have their own POV scene. It took about 3/4 of the book before I recognized the name of the house causing so much trouble. Each time it was mentioned before that, it would pop me out of the story while I tried to remember who they were.

Now for all the wonderful things about it: Thank GOODNESS we get a wonderfully written novel with queer leads where it's NOT a romance. Thank you, Hailey Turner! I'm so tired of this 'queer leads only in a romance' crap rule that seems to be out there. I could have done without the sex, as it wasn't needed, but at least the scenes were short.

This is a book that needs to be taken in bits and pieces because there is so much to remember. HOWEVER, it's not a book you can take in pieces the first time because there's SO much going on and if you take time, you'll forget all of the characters and what's going on by the next time you pick it up.

I now can't believe I have to wait a year for the next installment! I want to know what's going to happen with Soren, Coris, and their dreaded conniving elder sister. (Can I just say I hope she has something lasting as her punishment. Then again, one of the star gods is behind her, so who knows... Maybe he will rescue her. Or maybe his wife will kick her behind to the wastelands for her actions while removing her ability to reach the aether. ) And there are tons of minor characters I need to hear about as well.

Turner has built an incredible world here. From the remnants and poisonous spores to the waring nations. The conniving houses to the aether and clockwork engines. And now, with the new creations causing trouble... all 'built' by the dreaded sister... And I can't forget to mention the interfering star gods who come across very Greek Pantheon like for their desire to interfere with people's lives. To pit them against one another for fun.

As if the book wasn't good enough on its own, the narration was perfect. Each 'people' had their own accent. And each main character within each people had their own voice. Gary Furlong did an outstanding job. He should seriously win an award for all the unique voices he did in this novel.

Before book 2 comes out, I'll reread or relisten to book 1 so I can get all the names/places/peoples back in my head so I'm back up to speed.

SERIOUSLY great start to a series.

An Exceptionally Fascinating Story & Listen🎧

Wow, this book is absolutely amazing for so many reasons, including the complexity and all the layers to the story, the world building is phenomenal, the same goes for the character growth and development and saving the best mention for last is how well written the story is and how all the pieces fall together, just like clockwork. Hailey Turner is a gifted author with a creative and imaginative mind, and her gift truly shines in this book, as bright as the star fire shines. Labelling this a saga is the perfect way to label it, there are several segments/parts each having their own chapters within. The first lays down the foundation and gives you a glimpse of what went on in the world and see how certain things were put in motion, it also introduces you to some of the key players, so you get to see who they really are, where and how they came about when seen again in the segments to come. A lot goes on in this book and there are different groups and factions to follow, each has a purpose whether it is to gain power or prevent another from having power, whether or not they know it yet. I was a huge fan of Honovi and Blaine, Vanya and Soren, Caris and Nathaniel, there is also Eimarille Rourke, believed to be the last of the royal bloodline, I am not sure how I feel about her, the jury is still out on that. This epic fantasy is fascinating and brilliantly plotted with drama, action, sci fi/steampunk, mystery, thrilling & suspense, heartfelt emotions and romance. Hailey Turner, thank you for this amazing story, I am looking forward to what happens next and where it all leads to.

🎧 📚🎧 And for the exceptional narration, Gary Furlong’s talent has no bounds, he did an amazing job covering the roles for all the different characters giving each their own distinct sound, not only humanizing and bringing the characters to life but choosing a voice that was a perfect fit for that characters persona. I loved how he took each role, ran with it, and made it his own. He set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the characters emotions and projected them into his performance, having you feel every single one. Gary Furlong is an entertaining storyteller and a versatile voice artist, his narration enhances an already amazing story to another level. Thank you for this amazing listen.

    Blown away by this narration!

Narrator: It’s been a long time since I listened to Gary and I wasn’t sure how this audio would sound, but I’m glad I gave it a try. I think he’s always been a versatile narrator, but there was something about his sound quality and narrations in his early audios that I didn’t love. But dang! I wasn’t expecting how amazing this audio would be! I have zero complaints. He’s always been a versatile narrator with a range of voices and that’s a huge part of why this audio is so good. I will definitely be grabbing up more audios by Gary and I look forward to the rest of this series in audio.

(I read this book first and then listened to the audio and I loved the story even more! It’s so good! Second book is out April 2023 and I can’t wait.)

Story: 5 star fantasy with MF, MM, and FF rep!

This is easily Hailey’s best book to date. I could not put it down! Her writing has improved so much and the storytelling in this book is *chef’s kiss*. It’s both plot and character driven, with lots of interesting characters and multiple plot lines that are carefully woven together. The pacing was perfect and things are kept interesting throughout the book, but the last hour-or-so had me literally on the edge of my sofa yelling at the characters because I was so invested in the story!

The first part of this book is a little dense, but it didn’t take much for me to get sucked into the story and understand what was going on. There are a lot of characters and different things going on, and we get to see the world through multiple points-of-view, but again it was all relatively easy to keep up with. And I loved all the characters, even the villainous ones. There are also multiple romances with MM, FF and MF being represented. True to Hailey fashion, the world is open minded about relationships of any kind and it’s not used as a plot point; love is love.

If I had to pick a favorite couple, it would be Honovi and Blaine, hands down! They’re an established couple when the book starts and Hailey does such a good job conveying their history, love and deep bond pretty much off the bat. And the way they’re introduced is really cool.

The world itself is fascinating. I loved the mix of fantasy, magic and steampunk elements. It made for a rich world. Hailey also does a great job with her imagery; it was so easy to picture everything. She also totally had me hooked right into the atmosphere/feel/mood of the story - if a scene was meant to be creepy, I was totally creeped out! If it was meant to be tense, I found myself glued to my kindle, literally on the edge of my seat, and worried for the character(s).

I can’t dive deep into the plot details because I don’t want to ruin anything, but there is a lot going on (it’s easy to keep up with!) and the way it all starts coming together was so so so interesting. If you’re a fan of fantasy, definitely give this book a try. It does end on a cliffhanger, but I will happily reread this book because it’s that good. A big thanks to the author for writing in a genre that needs more rep!

    Absolutely breathtaking scope!

First Gary did a fantastic job narrating this book. I have a book hangover after just listening to it, I would imagine that Gary would need a nice vacation after doing such a marvelous job creating the vocal addition the this book.

Hailey, love your work, however this book surpasses everything you’ve done so far and staggers me in the world building and character creation you’ve done now. I love so many of the characters, hate so many of the characters, and am broken-hearted for so many of the characters. I can’t wait, and yet fear, for the next book…which is coming, right? Right???

Overall the reach of this book is so very large, I would recommend that everyone give it listen if you love Dune or Lord of the Rings. It’s big like those works. The creation of the world is that grand and detailed. The characters that flawed and tangible.

Thank you Hailey and Gary. I think you both gave me a few new get hairs.
