Description

New York Times best seller

This thrilling novel kicks off what Stephen King calls “a trilogy that will stand as one of the great achievements in American fantasy fiction.”

Now a FOX TV series! THE PASSAGE airs Mondays at 9/8c.

Named one of the 10 best novels of the year by time and one of the best books of the year by The Washington Post, Esquire, U.S. News & World Report, NPR/On Point, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, BookPage, and Library Journal.

“It happened fast. Thirty-two minutes for one world to die, another to be born.”

An epic and gripping tale of catastrophe and survival, The Passage is the story of Amy - abandoned by her mother at the age of six, pursued and then imprisoned by the shadowy figures behind a government experiment of apocalyptic proportions. But Special Agent Brad Wolgast, the lawman sent to track her down, is disarmed by the curiously quiet girl and risks everything to save her. As the experiment goes nightmarishly wrong, Wolgast secures her escape - but he can’t stop society’s collapse. And as Amy walks alone, across miles and decades, into a future dark with violence and despair, she is filled with the mysterious and terrifying knowledge that only she has the power to save the ruined world.

Praise for The Passage

“[A] blockbuster.” (The New York Times Book Review)

“Mythic storytelling.” (San Francisco Chronicle)

“Magnificent... Cronin has taken his literary gifts, and he has weaponized them.... The Passage can stand proudly next to Stephen King’s apocalyptic masterpiece The Stand, but a closer match would be Cormac McCarthy’s The Road: a story about human beings trying to generate new hope in a world from which all hope has long since been burnt.” (Time)

“The type of big, engrossing read that will have you leaving the lights on late into the night.” (The Dallas Morning News)

“Addictive.” (Men’s Journal)

“Cronin’s unguessable plot and appealing characters will seize your heart and mind.” (Parade

Critiques

“Read this book and the ordinary world disappears.” (Stephen King)
“Magnificently unnerving . . . The Stand meets The Road.” ( Entertainment Weekly)
“Justin Cronin has written a wild, headlong, sweeping extravaganza of a novel. The Passage is the literary equivalent of a unicorn: a bona fide thriller that is sharply written, deeply humane, ablaze with big ideas, and absolutely impossible to put down.” (Jennifer Egan, author of A Visit from the Goon Squad)

A road trip like no other

Captivating while not completely original, a book that is difficult to put down. Not for those unwilling to stay the course.

A new type of vampire

The Passage is a well written novel about vampires, with a new and creative twist. I thought the first several hours laid out a good foundation to the rest of the story. Justin Cronin did a wonderful job in the introduction of all the main characters. They were well thought out and interesting. Overall the book was pretty good. I look forward to book number two.

Was he paid by the word?

The hype surrounding this book was extraordinarily positive. Unfortunately, I have been very disappointed.
I felt that the premise for the book was very creative, and had great potential. However, I don't believe I have come across an author who stretched out a narrative with such exhausting emptiness. For all its length, this is not really an epic tale. This is a plot story, without interesting characters, observational insight or psychological nuance. The vampire-virus conceit is not particularly scary, disturbing, campy or sexy. The writer draws out inconsequential details of activities, while breaking up the time line into a patchwork somewhat disconnected stories; the result renders the characters to placeholders or passersby, and the entire exposition lost its ability to make me care about anyone or what happens next. This is a story that could be seriously abridged; there was so little going forward in the story that I could multitask for long periods of time without missing a thing. I don't think I will be lining up for the next two volumes of the trilogy.
I don't even think that if the story could be repackaged as an HBO series or an Avatar like animation. The story is too disjointed.
Scott Brick comes across pretty flat in this reading, but I don't know if that is his fault. His strong point is earnestness, but this is a tale that is too boring to hold conviction over its length. The sentence structure of Mr. Cronin's writing lacks finesse of verb, adjective, metaphor and his dialog fails to evoke tension or reveal character. There is not much for Mr. Brick to work with.
This book has now been reviewed by thousands of readers with an average rating of over 3.7 indicating that many have loved it. Perhaps it is just not my cup of tea.

NOW I know why it was on sale.........

Okay. Everyone has said it better than I ever could. However, since I wasted my money on this "epic" piece of trash, I still want my say. I can only assume that the great reviews are from people under the age of 16. Every time audible offers a book at a special price I get burned. Every time. I wanted to force myself to listen to the whole thing since I paid for it. I just couldnt. I kept waiting for it to get interesting but gave up in the middle of the second part. I left three and a half parts on the table wondering if I quit too soon and didn't give it a chance. But after reading the other reviews Im glad I did. There are just too many other entertaining books out there for me to waste my time on something that is depressing and uninventive. Same old, same old. Nothing new under the Sun. I am actually offended by this book. How could it possibly take 5 parts to tell a story that could probably be told in one. Next time Im offered a sale on a new book Im going to pass.

500 pages to many

Stopping with 18hrs left, not even sure to where start. Man finds vampires, man engineers vampires, creates a plague, vampires take over the world with little pockets of retards left. The most drawn out & over informative book I have ever listened to. Full details on characters that make an appearance for two sentences, their background lasts longer than their time in the book. I'm very biased on all reviews, this book was just not for me.

Too long & too boring!

The plot is somewhat interesting but the length is just way out of proportion. I simply found this book to be seriously boring.

Too depressing to finish.

Ugh terrible. I made it half way thru and had to stop because it's just too depressing with no real brighter points. Then I read enough review that say it doesn't get any better. I have no desire to finish it. It worries me that so many people can enjoy some so dark, dreary, disheartening.

boring

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

no, could not keep my interest. It was repetitive, and boring. I love to read, but I had to force myself with this book.

What was most disappointing about Justin Cronin’s story?

just not my type.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of the narrators?

didn't matter.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

no

Any additional comments?

no

Amazed That This Received Such High Reviews

What disappointed you about The Passage?

I bought this based on the reviews. Normally the reviews are spot on. I'm pretty easy to please as a reader, but this book was awful. Insanely slow, I mean very very slow. I gave it the college try and made it to about an hour left and just couldn't take it anymore. NOTHING was happening. Reminded me of the movie The Village. Just as boring.

What could Justin Cronin have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Some action. Any action.

How could the performance have been better?

Brick did good.

Any additional comments?

Wanted to stab myself in the ears.

Nothing exceeds like excess!

Ever listen to a drunk ramble on about unrelated events in his life? Yeah, this book.

Unbelievably, I am 24 hours into this endless ramble and I have another 12 hours to go! Not gonna do it. Author Cronin must love the "sound of his voice" because there is no end to his bombast. There seems to be no point to this story. There are too many characters and I don't really care what happens to any of them at this point. I love unabridged novels but I am so sorry I bought this one.

The Passage

This book gripped me from the start and I was totally immersed in the story.
Few books have grabbed my attention so fully and I would recommend anyone to read or listen to this one of the most amazing stories I've ever listened to!
Thanks Justin.

Eine gelungene Mischung

Würden Sie dieses Hörbuch einem Freund empfehlen? Wenn ja, was würden Sie ihm dazu sagen?

Flyers...

I think I have never had a book more times in my hands than this one. It always found me no matter if I was at a train station or at a local bookstore it was just there and it wanted to be read. I finally gave in and started listening to it.

THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS:

Initially I was confused. Every chapter is written from a different point of view but it's interesting nonetheless. Especially Amy warmed my heart and the connection she has to Wolgast who became a somewhat father substitute was relatable and heartwarming. This made the first quarter of the book worth reading.

From there on I was just bored out of my mind and I don't even know why. Justin Cronin proved in the first part of the story that he is able to write a good story and characters that you can relate to. But this? I couldn't care less about the colonists. Every chapter I was hoping those damn virals would finally destroy this camp but noooo...

Luckily Amy showed up again and then it was an up and down for me.

It wasn't a bad book but it could have been cut down a bit.

At this point I'm not sure if I will continue with this series.

Unendlich langweilige Ewigkeit
