Description

From Daniel Silva, the number one New York Times best-selling author, comes a modern masterpiece of espionage, love, and betrayal. She was his best-kept secret....

In an isolated village in the mountains of Andalusia, a mysterious Frenchwoman begins work on a dangerous memoir. It is the story of a man she once loved in the Beirut of old, and a child taken from her in treason’s name. The woman is the keeper of the Kremlin’s most closely guarded secret. Long ago, the KGB inserted a mole into the heart of the West - a mole who stands on the doorstep of ultimate power. Only one man can unravel the conspiracy: Gabriel Allon, the legendary art restorer and assassin who serves as the chief of Israel’s vaunted secret intelligence service. Gabriel has battled the dark forces of the new Russia before, at great personal cost. Now he and the Russians will engage in a final epic showdown, with the fate of the postwar global order hanging in the balance.

Critiques

"A tense, thrilling adventure.... With Silva's novels you find yourself being educated as well as being entertained.... Silva is that rarity of rarities, a writer whose stories just keep getting better." (Huffington Post)

"An irresistible thriller.... The phrase 'number-one New York Times best-selling author' gets bandied about a lot (Which list? For how long?), but in Silva's case, it means exactly what it says." (Booklist, starred review)

"Written by one of our greatest living spy novelists, House of Spies gives us protagonist Gabriel Allon in his 17th adventure. The novel features Silva's taut and compelling dialogue and keen insight into the human psyche." (Dallas Morning News)

Not typical of Daniel Silva!

All of Daniel Silva's novels including his 18 in the Gabriel Allon series are in my Audible library. THE OTHER WOMAN, Book 18 in the Allon series, is Silva's most complex novel and the most difficult to read and understand. At its simplest it goes back in British intelligence history to 1963 when at age 51 Kim Philby was found to be a Russian agent who was very high in British Intelligence. It then supposes that Philby had a daughter by a French woman who is second in command in current British Intelligence. She is also a Russian agent. But the plot is much more complex as it involves Gabriel Allon of Israel's "office", and leaders and agents of British, US, and Russian intelligence. It is a great plot that I have down rated from 5 to 4 stars because some of the complexity gets in the way of an otherwise great plot at times. George Guidall's narration is superb as usual.

Daniel Silva delivers another winner

All the excitement of starting a new Daniel Silva book and then it's over all too soon.

Another excellent book in the great Gabriel Allon series. I do like that man! Silva's descriptions and dialogue make Gabriel into a hard yet compassionate man. And the scenes with his daughter! Brilliant.

I thought the story was fascinating. Why couldn't something like this have happened? Maybe it has and we don't know it. I loved it.

However, I have to comment on the quality of the audiobook. George Guidall is a phenomenal reader. That goes without saying. But the production had obvious do-overs that were inserted very obviously. It was distracting and a disservice to Daniel Silva's work, as well as the narrator's.

I love living in Gabriel's and his team's world for a few days and it's hard to leave. At least I can always start the series over again.

The "Other" books are better

I am a huge fan of Silva's books. I eagerly await a chance to follow Gabriel's life's ups and downs . . . . . and especially, when the stories are more about art restorations and events surrounding that work. And even though the last several books have had less of that, and more about "The Office" work . . . . the earlier and 'Other' books are better. This book was literally all over the map, which usually is a good thing; but this book never settled down. It felt like completely new characters were being introduced ALL the way through it, nearly 'til the end. The reader could not settle in to the story, as new people & places were being introduced over and over and over. Usually that makes for a great complicated story . . . but I had to keep going back to the first of chapters to latch on to "Now, who's this? And what's going on?" Of all the books in this series, this was my least favorite. I'm hoping for more continuity next time around. It was too much work trying to keep up and connect everything to enjoy like I'm used to with Silva.

For fans of the genre only.

Tedious, endless details presented as if for their relevance in spy craft.
The book goes on, and on, with very little plot.
Beyond that, the narrator speaks in short bursts of broken phrases. His I,tonation never changes, every character has exactly the same voice, and his inability to read a sentence as if it has meaning is almost mechanical.
There will be some people who take in every single character as a familiar friend because they follow the series, for everybody else, look somewhere else.

What Reading is all About

Absolutely loved it! I've stumbled upon Mr Silva in the library, I borrowed all of his books, & had to purchase them so I could have the freedom to re-read them. What an exceptionally author he is. I have all of the books in this series and I pray he keeps it going. I suffer waiting for the next installation, such a good read: spying, research, full of accurate history... favorite characters; fluidity of the story line from book to book. Thank you so much for the availability of audio... I'm working and listening because I left my book home ...the narrator is wonderful and gives the nature and divers ethnicity of this book justice, it's drawing me right in...this is a great experience, thank you

Disappointed

I was really looking forward to the release of this new one. I am a fan of both the author and narrater. I did not like any of the characters and found it hard to follow.

More reflective than the others

Reading the other reviews, I do have to agree it was more complex than his other books, especially the first third or first half. I backtracked several times and considered it might have been helpful to have taken notes. I used to do that in the early John Le Carre books to keep track of the characters. But eventually it rolled along. In the earlier parts, it seemed like a Russian doll where you think you know what you're looking at, but then it is revealed there is something else inside. That happened several times and I was just thinking I'd had enough when you do begin to see what you're looking at. I also thought that with both Daniel Silva and Gabriel Allon aging, this was less action oriented and more looking back at the past, which,as someone older than both of them, I know one tends to do as an older person. I still liked it very much. There were some surprises yet it all hung together. I found myself wishing we could hear the real story of the "Russian collusion' going on these days in narrative form like this and the bad guys get caught in the end. What if one of the intelligence agencies heads under Obama was really working for Russia? Just saying.....

Not Up to Par

I have read all the Gabriel Allon books and others by Daniel Silva and this one was not as interesting and definitely not as exciting. Still it is finely spun web of intrigue . I wasn’t happy with the narration perhaps because I have imagined Gabriel’s voice differently. But it is harder to follow all the names and situations in an audiobook.

Erratic Storyline

It was very challenging to listen to. The story seemed to digress and was erratic in its flow. I've read other books by this author that were much better. #Suspenseful #slowlisten #espionage #tagsgiving #sweepstakes
