Histoire
Ex-policeman Bernie Gunther thought he'd seen everything on the streets of 1930s Berlin - until he turned freelance and he is sucked further into the grisly excesses of Nazi subculture. The year is 1936 and Berlin is preparing for the Olympic Games. Some of Bernie's Jewish friends are beginning to realise that they should have left while they could, and Bernie himself has been hired by a wealthy industrialist to investigate two murders that reach high into the Nazi Party.

Histoire
London is in lockdown under martial law. A hospital is being urgently built by the river Thames to contain the thousands of victims of a flu-like epidemic. Construction is brought to a sudden halt when a leather holdall containing the bones of a child is unearthed from the rubble. A psychopath has been unleashed on the city; his mission is to take all measures necessary to prevent the bones from being identified. But why are he and his handlers determined to go to such murderous lengths to hide the origins of the body?

Histoire
America, 1960. In Washington, DC, John F. Kennedy has just been elected president. In Havana, Fidel Castro has been in office for a year, and with Cold War tensions rapidly heating up and the Soviets leading the space race, the thought of a Communist leader so close to home is already raising American blood pressure. Anti-Communist fever is rampant in the USA, with a paranoid establishment seeing reds under every bed. Nevertheless, the decision to snuff out the threat of Castro by hiring Tom Jefferson, America's best assassin, to kill him comes from an unusual quarter: the Mafia.

Histoire
In the summer of 1885, three Frenchmen arrived in London for a few days’ shopping. One was a Prince, one was a Count, and the third was a commoner with an Italian name, who four years earlier had been the subject of one of John Singer Sargent’s greatest portraits. The three men's lives play out against the backdrop of the Belle Epoque in Paris. The beautiful age of glamour and pleasure more often showed its ugly side: hysterical, narcissistic, decadent and violent, a time of rampant prejudice and blood-and-soil nativism, with more parallels to our own age than we might imagine.

Does It Get Much Better?
How many secrets do YOU have? How many OF those will get you into a fair amount of trouble?
Suffice it to say, Bernie Gunter lands himself in far too much trouble from a life of secrets he'd rather be rid of, not to mention one or two people as well.
Phillip Kerr's thorough rendition of post WWII's problems as they entwine Gunter, makes for a terrific read. As for Jeff Harding...narrators don't get much better either!
My advice to you, get some decent whiskey and a good cigar, lock the door on the 21st century and enjoy The Other Side Of Silence. It's a blast from the past.

Vintage Gunther!
This time set on the south of France Bernie tangles with former Nazis and current spies. Yes there's a woman and deceit, tension and violence but a superb performance and masterly plotting ensures freshness and a gripping episode in this ongoing Bernie Gunther saga. Highly recommended.
