Ottawa, February 2022. Canadian banks freeze the accounts of protest donors without a court order, and people learn at store counters that their cards have stopped working. Four years later, in January 2026, Canada's Federal Court of Appeal rules the emergency invocation behind those freezes unreasonable and beyond the law. Between those two dates sits the question this book exists to answer: what is money worth if someone else decides when it works?

The Off Switch begins from a simple observation. Money has always come in two families: value that travels by possession, the coin and the bill that ask nothing of anyone, and value that travels by permission, the account entry that moves only when a chain of institutions agrees. The first family is being retired. The second is being wired to a switch. Across documented cases on four continents, the book follows that switch from the trucker accounts of Ottawa to the two hundred ten billion euros of sovereign reserves immobilized in Brussels, from British banks that closed accounts and refused to say why to the Swedish law that now forces grocery stores to accept cash, from India's demonetization to the central banker who promised absolute control over digital money and offered it as a feature.

The book is built to be checked. Eighteen chapters in four parts, with four short true scenes called Gates standing between them and one chapter of fiction that announces itself as fiction in its first line. A Sources and Verification section keys every chapter to its records. A section called What Will Age First names the claims most likely to be overtaken by events. The glossary defines the machinery in plain language, and nothing here asks for your trust without showing its receipts.
