    Disappointed

I really like the first book (The fifth Season) it felt fresh in it's setting and the caracterisation was great. the prose was also really good and second tense narrator was original.
But unfortunately, The obelisk Gate kinda indoes all that. Without going into spoilers : The main caracter Essun change drastically and it could have been well done but is never really adressed. The story becomes a drag in the middle and there arent enough fascinating reveals to carry the story. Too many sloppy info dumps and a pretty underwhelming ending.
A real shame, I really loved the first book and now am not even sure about reading the third one...

The narrator Robin Miles is still top notch, nice voice and good intonations/accents.

    Slow but hard-hitting

I love this series! It's one of the great modern sci-fi books, in my opinion. It's not about action but the development of characters in a dystopian world. Very strong female characters.

The second book is as good as the first!

The story keeps evolving and expanding without losing focus. A rare trilogy where the second book is at least as good as the first.

    Lost the balance

The second book in the series is very dreary. It's to be expected, since the series is about the world ending and impending doom/suffering, but the first book managed to keep a balance of misery and adventure, while the second plunges deep into the former. It somehow manages this despite there being a lot of exciting and adventurous events and discoveries all throughout the story.
Also, again, trigger warning- child death/suffering. I'm sure this is an exaggeration, but every time a child appears in the story I already expect it to be traumatized or injured in some cruel way.

    Just keeps on getting better

I love the slow realisation of the protagonists. We the listener don’t get any more info than they do so we journey along with them with the same excitement at new discoveries and the same emotions as good / bad / sad / fair / unfair things happen. It’s a harsh real world. I need a book of something else before the final in the trilogy

    Cool but…

It’s a good follow up to the first book, but as the first one the main character can be very annoying at time. But also as the first one, the last third part of the book is captivating.
    Overall good nonetheless.

Not quite as brilliant as The Fifth Season

While not quite as intriguing as the first in the series, it was still a good read

Great read, I enjoyed it overall

The first book was very very good. Interesting and so different. This book is less everything but still good. Keeps you interested in the characters and the narrative. The plot is a bit confusing. I’ll definitely read the next one but I’m not in any hurry, if that makes sense.

Even better than the first one

If you read The fifth season, you already know.
If not, stay assured, it is still great.

I've consumed this one so fast it feel shorter. A lot happens and the plot thickens. You must remember what happened in the first book because this is a direct continuation, so be prepared.

All I said about the first one is still true. But I have to emphasize, the narrator work is even more flawless that last time. She does an amazing job voicing every character and in one moment in particular goes beyond simply voicing and gives the audiobook a very special thing that the book never could acomplished alone. Kudos to her, brilliant performance.

Now if you excuse me, I'm going to start the third one.

Best Books I've Read in Years

This entire trilogy was such a joy to read, even if it was quite dark in theme. Was so refreshing to have a true adult, fantasy/scfi storyline that didn't shy away from heavier topics. I was completely emersed until the very end. Best books I've picked up in many years

    Excellent

The story continues and is obviously planned from the start to span more than one book. Not the kind of "extruded phantasy" one often encounters which just build on a past success trying to squeeze out some more. Solid storytelling instead with a good mixture of mystery and explorative success to the reader/listener.
Robin Miles is easily the best storyteller I encountered so far.
    A delight.

    Worthy Sequel

Let's keep this review short: have you read / listened to the first book? This is the direct continuation of the story and you want to listen to it. Story, worldbuilding and performance are still as good as in the firsr one.
If you don't know the first book - don't buy this one, I fear you'll not understand much.

Wenig Handlung, viele Längen. Ansonsten gute Ideen

Interessante Ideen, gute Sprecherin. War allerdings froh als ich durch war. Die Geschichte hat einige Längen und wird langatmig. Das dritte Buch habe ich auch, weiß aber nicht ob ich es lesen werde

Everything in the first book pointed here

It's an awesome follow up. Many questions are answered and it's much more enticing as the first installment to me because so much happens and there are tense moments indeed.

Robin Miles is just a genius. the story is amazing

The story is amazing enough but I would give Miles 6 or 7 stars to Miles if possible. Her way of storytelling is just so intriguing
