Nestled in the heart of Trussville, Alabama, the Cahaba Project stands as a living testament to the power of visionary planning, community, and resilience. Born from the New Deal era and rooted in the soil of the American South, this historic neighborhood was more than a government housing initiative–it became a cornerstone of identity for generations.
In this thoroughly researched narrative, The Model City: History, Heritage and the Hereafter of the Resettlement Administration’s Crown Jewel traces the evolution of the Cahaba Project from its bold beginnings in the late 1930s to its enduring presence in the lives of those who still call it home today. Through historical insights and personal stories, listeners are invited to walk the shaded streets, sit with longtime residents on their service porches, and discover the soul of a place that helped shape the unique character of this nationally historic community.
Whether you grew up under the metal roof of a Cahaba Project cottage or are discovering this chapter of national history for the first time, The Model City offers an intimate look at a beloved community–its past, its present, and its future.
