Description

In the heyday of the British Raj, Anahita becomes Princess Indira’s official companion, and accompanies her to England just before the outbreak of the Great War. There, she meets the young Donald Astbury – reluctant heir to a magnificent, estate – and his scheming mother. Eighty years later, Rebecca Bradley, a young American film star, has the world at her feet. Her latest role, playing a 1920s debutante, takes her to the now-crumbling Astbury Hall…

A Great Story with a Superb Performance!

Loved this story for the obvious reasons...romance, history, past vs. present...it's all there. In my humble opinion, this is the perfect recipe for a great AUDIObook: lots of great stories out there, but the narrator makes this awesome! (So many narrators today are annoying and just plain bad! They over-enunciate and are flat and boring.) Ms. Srinivasan really brings this to life.

Historical romance at It's BEST !!!!

What did you love best about The Midnight Rose?

I love the format of "then" (1918) and now and how gracefully Lucinda Riley's words dance between the two separate time periods. Midnight Rose provides a perfect balance of historical facts mixed in with a heavy dose of romance !!!!!!!!!!

What does Anjana Srinivasan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She has a wide range of charater voices and does of perfect job bouncing between the tight repressed voices of the Brits and the emotionally abadoned voices of the indian characters.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

YES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any additional comments?

How long to we have to wait for the next Lucinda Riley book ???

She is on my list of FAV's !!!!!!!!!!!

Brilliant Narration + Excellent Story = Deeply Satisfying

Great audiobook. Terrific story. Lucinda Riley never disappoints. Her multi-layered stories are rife with characters that you can't help but forge a bond with as you traverse two time settings. The Midnight Rose is an excellent tale that's compelling-it pulls you in never lets go. Twists and turns will make your heart both ache and soar. The true star in this audiobook is the narrator Anjana Srinvasan. She is the single best audiobook narrator I've come across after years of listening. The ability to not only act the book out like a fine actress, she gives each character a true voice and can flip from an Indian accent, British accent, and American accent with the greatest of ease. Bravo Ms. Srinvasan, I'll be looking out for books you narrate, you truly offer an 'experience'. Highly recommend.

Really loved this one

One of those long and winding story lines that you can't wait to get back to. I recently read a few books where at halfway I figured out the end and was just annoyed it took the characters so long to figure it out This one kept you guessing up to the end. I totally loved the very end, so much so I am writing this review. Narration was wonderful. Anjana. Srinivasan had it all, between the accents and inflections I always knew who was speaking.

Intriguing story of WWI era

While I enjoyed this complex and well-woven story, one element of the narration was incredibly annoying. The narrator performed believable Indian and English accents to the ear of a non-native of either of those, but one oft repeated word in the American dialect totally spoiled the narration.

Americans of education, and especially those of the 1920s, would never pronounce the name "Antony" as "Ant-knee" and yet the narrator does so repeatedly when trying to use an American accent, rendering the British pronunciation correctly, but coming across as a Rode Island or New Jersey tough instead of a Julliard trained actress. Where was the voice coach?? And why was this one word, which must have occurred on a majority of pages in the book, allowed to spoil the whole?

I hate to sound picky, but such small things become large through frequent repetition.

midnight rose

I loved this book. I could not stop listening. The writer kept you wanting to hear what comes next, and never disappoints.
The reader was a pleasure to listen to.
The story of a woman's life , filled with joy , sadness, frustration about old traditions which inhibitated relationships.
To modern days where freedom to choose how to live your life by your own dictates.
A true love story , with a good ending.
