Deborah Moggach
Sunday Times bestselling author Deborah Moggach revisits her best-loved setting in the follow-up novel to The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
'THANK GOD for Deborah Moggach' Independent
'The Moggach miracle continues' The Times
A generation after we first visited it, the 'Best Exotic' Marigold Hotel, where Western pensioners retire to soak up the sun and have another crack at life, is still beautifully decaying. If now plagued by Instagrammers getting in everyone's way. Not least chef Tikal, in the throes of marital troubles at home, hotel owner Sonny, with some big decisions to make, and duty manager Lalit, whose affair with visiting beautician Jamila is cruelly doomed.
The hotel might be half-empty - naturally the years have taken some cherished friends - but for Wendy, recently widowed and fresh off the plane, it's the place for one last adventure. Even if the other residents have their own problems. There's Gordon, the taciturn ex-cop, burdened with a terrible secret, Florence, once a Vogue cover model with a racy past, who unburdens herself to the local holy man, and Sylvia, who's not at all who she seems.
As she settles in and starts enjoying a flirtation with a dashing blast-from-the-past, Ravi, Wendy is not best pleased when her daughter arrives to take her home and resume grandmother duties. Ruth's arrival unleashes a whole emotional avalanche, where the residents and staff of the Marigold will each have a decision to make.
Should they listen to what their hearts are telling them? After all, you're only old once.
The Marigold Forever is a heartwarming, surprising and highly relatable social comedy with plenty of twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat.
