Description

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet: Booktrack Edition adds an immersive musical soundtrack to your audiobook listening experience!*

Short-listed for the Bailey's Women's Prize for Fiction.

The beloved debut novel that will restore your faith in humanity.

When Rosemary Harper joins the crew of the Wayfarer, she isn't expecting much. The ship, which has seen better days, offers her everything she could possibly want: a small, quiet spot to call home for a while, adventure in far-off corners of the galaxy and distance from her troubled past.

But Rosemary gets more than she bargained for with the Wayfarer. The crew is a mishmash of species and personalities, from Sissix, the friendly reptilian pilot, to Kizzy and Jenks, the constantly sparring engineers who keep the ship running. Life on board is chaotic but more or less peaceful - exactly what Rosemary wants.

Until the crew are offered the job of a lifetime: the chance to build a hyperspace tunnel to a distant planet. They'll earn enough money to live comfortably for years...if they survive the long trip through war-torn interstellar space without endangering any of the fragile alliances that keep the galaxy peaceful.

But Rosemary isn't the only person on board with secrets to hide, and the crew will soon discover that space may be vast, but spaceships are very small indeed.

*Booktrack is an immersive format that pairs traditional audiobook narration to complementary music. The tempo and rhythm of the score are in perfect harmony with the action and characters throughout the audiobook. Gently playing in the background, the music never overpowers or distracts from the narration, so listeners can enjoy every minute. When you purchase this Booktrack edition, you receive the exact narration as the traditional audiobook available, with the addition of music throughout.

Background Hums, rocket ship engines, random music just ruined this book

I don't have bad hearing or at least I don't think I do but the constancy clicks, hum of the engines, echos of other conversations and just random elevator music was so distracting that I couldn't get into the story.

Relaxing book with lovable characters

The book was a great listen for my daily commute. Each chapter felt like an episode of an ongoing tv series. It touched on a number of social and moral issues without sounding like the author was pushing her opinion on the listener. I thought the narrator did an extraordinary job voicing the characters. It was easy to tell which character was speaking and she did a good job staying consistent with all the alien dialects/languages. Kizzy's voice made me smile every time.

Very enjoyable

I like both narrations of this book although I think lean a little more towards the original narration. Even with that said it's still a really good lesson. Best with headphones.

The soundscape ruined it

I liked the story just fine, but the soundscape absolutely ruined an otherwise fun story. It mostly seemed to be added w/o thought and at times was completely incongruous with the scene. Even when it was appropriate it seemed just slapped on top. Music and soundscapes in general can add a lot, but they must be done with thought.

Amazing Book, Incredible Reader

This book was fantastic. Loved the performance, this reader is quite talented and all the characters were very vivid. Background noises were a little distracting at first but then helped with overall immersion. Initial exposition took a while but after the halfway mark the book really flew by, my next credit is going straight to the sequel. Perfect balance of both plot and characters driving the novel. Like Firefly 2.0 but with less gun slinging and more contemplation of life, rules, morals, colonization and racial/species coexistence.

Just brilliant. Read it, you won't be disappointed.

The intentional background noise killed it for me.

I really wanted to enjoy this book, and the first two chapters were good enough to ensure that I'll read the rest of it via Kindle. However, I cannot listen to one more minute of the audio version!

The actual narrator is fine - not great, but good. However, the producer apparently felt that since this is a book set on spaceships, there should be spaceship noises in the background. I generally dislike such additions to books - RC Bray's narration of The Martian is the absolute gold standard, in my opinion and it has none of that nonsense - but I can live with it if it's not overdone. Unfortunately, in this case it was both overdone and downright done poorly to boot! Never mind a little music at the start of a chapter. The background noise in this book is *constant* - intentionally! There's a humming noise that I think is meant to sound like a fan. When a character even *thinks* about a rocket launch, there's the muted sounds of a rocket. I'm sure there's other stuff, too - but after skipping to random points in several chapters and realizing that humming is an incessant background, I threw in the towel.

The noises presumably were added to make it feel like you're onboard the ship with the characters. However, at least for me, it actually pulled me out of the story. I was constantly made aware that I was listening to a book, rather than able to simply lose myself in the narration. In the attempt to create that feeling without overwhelming the narrator, they made the background noise really quiet. You'd think that'd be good. In reality, it's so quiet that you're not sure if you're hearing that or if it's something else. I found it very distracting: I'd be listening to the story, notice that I didn't hear the humming anymore, then end up paying attention to that for several seconds before realizing that it was still playing but my mind had tuned it out.

This would, of course, take me out of the story, meaning I'd have to back it up 30 seconds to catch whatever I'd missed and get back into it. (I often listen while walking my dogs. In a Chicago winter, that means taking off a glove, getting my phone out, hitting the back button twice since that took time too, putting the phone back just right so I can hear it in my coat pocket, then pulling the glove back on. All while the other hand is holding the leash with one or two dogs on it and often a big maglite, too, coyotes being a problem here.) After maybe fifteen minutes of *that* nonsense, I was ready to pull my hair out!

The story has definite promise - but unless you like background noise in your audiobooks, I'd get this one on Kindle or even actual paper.

Amazing scifi

The best scifi I've read in years, in naturally challenges the reader to question their positions.

A good story hurt by overproduction.

This is a book I love and I will admit my views are colored by having heard the original audio version and reader. The reader vocally is probably closer in age to the main character, but doesn’t have the range to deal with a couple of the other characters. She is a good reader, but I think the range of character ages and genders are a bit beyond her current range.

However the reader is not the weakness here. The addition of music interstitial and background does not serve the production well. Also the sound effects seem to more distract than enhance the story.

eben so gut wie die Originalversion

Hintergrundmusik und Geräusche sind nett und meist leise. die Fassung mit nur Text ist ebenso gut.
