    Description

Number-One New York Times Best Seller

Investigator Lacy Stoltz follows the trail of a serial killer and closes in on a shocking suspect - a sitting judge - in “one of the best crime reads of the year. … Bristling with high-tech detail and shivering with suspense. … Worth staying up all night to finish” (Wall Street Journal).

In The Whistler, Lacy Stoltz investigated a corrupt judge who was taking millions in bribes from a crime syndicate. She put the criminals away, but only after being attacked and nearly killed. Three years later, and approaching 40, she is tired of her work for the Florida Board on Judicial Conduct and ready for a change.

Then she meets a mysterious woman who is so frightened she uses a number of aliases. Jeri Crosby’s father was murdered 20 years earlier in a case that remains unsolved and has grown stone-cold. But Jeri has a suspect whom she has become obsessed with and has stalked for two decades. Along the way, she has discovered other victims.

Suspicions are easy enough, but proof seems impossible. The man is brilliant, patient, and always one step ahead of law enforcement. He is the most cunning of all serial killers. He knows forensics, police procedure, and most important: He knows the law.

He is a judge in Florida - under Lacy’s jurisdiction.

He has a list with the names of his victims and targets, all unsuspecting people unlucky enough to have crossed his path and wronged him in some way. How can Lacy pursue him without becoming the next name on his list?

The Judge’s List is by any measure John Grisham’s most surprising, chilling novel yet.

    Terrible narration!!

THE worst narration!!! Wow, doesn’t anyone check this out before it’s completed. Could’ve been a decent story to listen to!

    NARRATION WAS JUST AWFUL

The narration was lackluster, and I could not distinguish when a different character was speaking. It became mindnumbing trying to determine who was speaking. It was so distracting that I can't tell whether I even liked the book. I was so hopeful about this book...

    Thank you Mr. Grisham

As always, a very well written story. Ms Parker gave a wonderful performance. I sure hope we get to see the private detective team being formed in September.

    Very disappointing

I was really excited about this book being an avid Grisham fan. Sadly the NARRATION WAS TERRIBLE!!!! Sooooo slow and monotonous. The storyline was medicore Grisham with both female main characters really hard to like. Bummer.

    I wish I hadn't preordered this

And waited for other users' reviews before I bought it. While I enjoyed the narrator's performances in The Client, the overdramatization and rising intonation declaratives were very taxing on my poor ears to sit through for hours. The story didn't fare much better, either. I'm not sure I understand why the informant decided on the BJC as her go-to authority and still cannot make sense of her paranoia or excessive traumatic response to a crime that she did not even witness in person. As an avid consumer of crime fiction and nonfiction, I do not share the informant's or investigators' awe for the perpetrator's methods, since strangulation seems like the easiest MO for a perfect crime. And I find it difficult to believe that he did not leave other trace evidence (such as hair, which would have easily given investigators his DNA). The flimsy plot, the unlikable characters, and the flippant tone of the narration make me wish I had canceled my pre-order of this title and used my credit on a more deserving one.

    Best one yet!

Grisham has done it again. I have read all his books, some were better than others. This one was a page turner or however you say that when you listen to it on Audible. The narrator was top notch, too. I usually don't like female narrators. Mary Louise Parker had just the right inflections. Do it again, John!

    Boring

The narrator is boring and the book is bad. Really disappointed that I spent a credit on this book.

    Very disappointed!

I've read reviews complaining about the narration. I agree with them all - I listened at 1.3 speed; that didn't help much. The real disappointment was the story. It was a pretty superficial story all along, then just when it seemed to be getting better, it fizzled. The ending was feeble, but it went along with the rest of it. Just a complete disappointment. I was relieved when it was over.

Where oh where is Michael Beck?!?!

I love Grisham novels & think that Michael Beck is the voice of Grisham. Why he's not reading this book & The Whistler is beyond me. I know it's a female lead character, but he can do voices & does them very well. The women who read this book & The Whistler have no idea how to do voices, so it's impossible to differentiate between characters. I almost gave up, but stuck it out until the end, & was glad it was over. By far not my favorite.
