underwhelming
Underwhelming.
The idea is great, but the words... it's an utterly romantic story, and I wish Shelley, Maupassant or Goethe had written it. But as it is, the book is long, tedious and not living up to story it wants to tell. The characters are quite flat, and I don't really care what happens to them - never a good sign. It feels like a book written based on too many Pinterest posts called "The best 100 writing tips".
It doesn't help that Audible choose a non French speaker for a French role. The voice actress can't even pronounce the name of the main character properly, and I do wonder if it really says "Vive LE France" in the book, as she says it. Even worse when she takes on a fake French accent while speaking English. Plus she overdoes the emphasise in general, quite lacking subtlety.
(And I don't agree with the ending, I think there's a mistake in the interpretation of the final words.)

Absolutely wonderful!
I´m quoting a previous review because Florian could not have put my thoughts and feeling into better words: ¨The quality of the narration is out of this world and I listen to a lot of fiction. Julia Whelan is able to give an auditive identity to each character and her voice gives each word an impact, a taste that enchanted me for the last week. I m a French researcher in medieval literature and folklore and Victoria Schwab made such a good representation of the dark... This is brilliant. This is literature.¨
I wholeheartedly agree with this as such I not only loved the book but think I would not have loved it as much if it wasn´t for the narrator. Coup de coeur!

capting story very well red by Julia Whelan, also understandable for non native speakers.
The story was very captivating but a little deceiving in the end.

Excellent narration and good story idea.
Some passages a bit too repetitious. I wish there had been more surprises. Sex with the devil should be less predictable.
