Description

Sal used to know his place with his adoptive gay father, their loving Mexican American family, and his best friend, Samantha. But it's senior year, and suddenly Sal is throwing punches, questioning everything, and realizing he no longer knows himself. If Sal's not who he thought he was, who is he?

This humor-infused, warmly humane look at universal questions of belonging is a triumph.

Commentaires

"Friendships, family, grief, joy, rage, faith, doubt, poetry, and love - this complex and sensitive book has room for every aspect of growing up!" (Margarita Engle, Newbery Honor-winning author of The Surrender Tree)
"Narrator Robbie Daymond's soft, calming tone is appropriate for the peaceful world of 17-year-old Sal.... Daymond's narration, though low-key, gives rounded portraits of all the story's characters and doesn't minimize Sal's heartache or his attempts to control his temper." ( AudioFile)

Happy Birthday to me!

I just want to say that I love the way his books make me feel. I love that there's no real plot, we just get to live with the characters for a snip-it of their lives. I love the way the author describes what's in the hearts of his characters. I just feel so good all over... I hope someone is loving this author. Cause I want to put him in my pocket and keep him with me always. I finished this book on my birthday, and there couldn't have been a better gift for myself.

Great book, but did not like narration

I love both this book and the author Benjamin Alire Saenz, but this narration did not do it justice. Whenever the narrator read any female character's dialogue, narrator used a very fake and diminishing voice over normal dialogue. Daymond used a tone and pitch that made everything any girl said sound stupid and like she was really dumb, despite the character being completely different on the page.

A beautiful masculine tapestry of life.

This production took me on a beautiful journey and I'm so glad the writer and the narrator crafted a story with truth and guidance for teens (and the grandfathers who love them).

Boring and disappointing

After how much I loved Aristotle and Dante, I was shocked by the fact I couldn’t get through this one. Don’t even download it. It’s self indulgent and boring.

A very moving story about loss and our ability to keep living and loving

A well written and thoughtful story of young adults struggling with life’s most painful and beautiful moments. Stories of the true power of love and what it means to stand up for and with those we love. Also a story about loss and how we get through it.

Simply Fantastic ...

Both the story and narration are extremely well done. Which is to say they are complementary in the very best of ways.

If your unsure, try the sample. But absolutely give this author and narrator the chance to demonstrate what others hope to be.

Great job!!!

beautiful snapshot in Sally's life

I had read Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the universe and loved Final Fantasy XV. so when I heard the voice of Prompto did the audio book, I had to listen. While the book doesn't have an overarching plot, I think it makes it more relatable with memorable characters and a glimpse into a person's pains. the best part about this book was the platonic love. A love between Father and Son and amongst friends.

Tried, but did not finish

I loved Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe so much, that I was really surprised at my reaction to this book. I kept going, even as it seemed to drag more as I went, and while things happened in the plot, it felt more like just a series of events rather than a story that was moving intentionally in one direction. I love a good character-driven story, so the issue was not that this wasn’t a plot-driven novel. The other problem for me was that it felt like reading a story about high school kids written by an adult who thought this is how high school kids act and think, as opposed to a story with high school kids that felt authentic to who those kids are at that age and stage in their life. There was too much self-analysis and summarizing of feelings and action, which threw me out of the story and made it difficult for me to connect with the characters. The narration was very good, but after 7 hours, with 4 more to go, I felt it was time to move on to something else (even though I hate not to finish a book).

WFTD = Change

this was the first time someone read a book to me. Due to my bad eyesight, I've a hard time reading so I really enjoyed this. Plus, it was one of my favorite voice to hear! The ending brought tears ti my eyes and a smile on my face. As I've never really known a family, this story made me even feel loved. Beautiful characters, sad stories and a strong bond of family and friendship. I believe that along with Salvador, I've finally found the real me and I like who I'm becoming. I loved the jokes, sarcasm and especially the "looks" they could give each other throughout the story. Great story and great reading. Definetly going to listen again!
