A WASTE OF MONEY
The book could have been an enjoyable listen (although some plot elements are downright beyond belief) but the narration reduces it to farcical levels. The narrator adopts a psuedo South African accent and strange voice intonations for all the characters, which makes them not only comical (at best) but wholly unbelievable and simple minded (at worse). It is off-putting and unnecessary - South Africans do not speak like that. I perservered only because I thought the author could not be blamed for the clownish performance, but my advice is: DON'T BUY THIS BOOK.

A deep, dark fascinating story
The story is compelling, getting deeper and darker at every turn. Humphrey Bower is masterful.

Performance so bad I cannot listen further
Galgut is South African and his story is set in South Africa. I am South African too but the narrator is not. His accents are inconsistent and inappropriate.
So what does this mean for people who aren’t South African and do not know local accents?
Having no anchor opens the door to caricature. For instance, one brother speaks like a condescending English spoon and the other - a bit like an Ausie. In other words, that they grew up in the same house is entirely implausible.
Etc etc.
As for the story itself, two hours in, I do not identify with any of the characters and keep waiting for something to happen.
Let’s give Galgut the benefit of the doubt and say the terrible narration interrupted any identification with the characters.

Another masterpiece by Damon Galgut
I first read "The Promise" and enjoyed it so much. Then "The Good Doctor" and now I've been reading and contemporarily listening to "The Impostor". I deeply love the way Galgut writes. And the narrator of this audiobook is also outstanding.
