Description

September 1356. Poitiers. The greatest knights of the age were ready to give battle. On the English side, Edward, the Black Prince, who'd earned his spurs at Crecy. On the French side, the King and his son, the Dauphin. With 12,000 knights.

And then there is William Gold. A cook's boy who had once been branded as a thief. William dreams of being a knight, but in this savage new world of intrigue, betrayal and greed, first he must learn to survive. As rapacious English mercenaries plunder a country already ravaged by plague and the peasantry take violent revenge against the French knights who have failed to protect them, is chivalry any more than a boyish fantasy?

Well worth your time

I learned an enormous amount about the Hundred Years' War. At the same time, it's a well-written, engaging story with a likeable hero who you start rooting for almost immediately. I am told that the descriptions of fighting are accurate. There are occasional slight irritations with narration - pauses that are a little too long, accents that don't seem to match the character as written (I'm thinking of Fiore) - but on the whole the narration is very well done. It's pretty clear that most of Europe was a terrible mess during this time and that the gulf between the rich and poor was enormous. It also seems that there was some social mobility, although not clear how much. Highly recommended, especially if you like adventure as well as history.

Hooked

I thoroughly enjoyed this tale spun by Christian Cameron. A wonderful story with ups and downs and I enjoyed every point in it. Well told, in a perspective I found refreshing. If you love history I highly recommend this novel, Cameron does his research. I have pushed the rest of this series to the top of my reading list.

wow...

I've completely wasted far too many 5-star ratings on so many lesser books. recalibrating my scale, if those were 5 stars, this be a ten! thank you Mr. Cameron, for this epically told (and beautifully narrated) story. I'm off to the next one now! VKL

Where have you been all my life.

I guess that this guy recently got put on audible, this is my absolute jam. First of all, spot on Audible, for knowing what I like. This was the only book I my suggested reading not on my wish list already, but I digress. I was thinking that this would be an adequate substitute for Bernard Cornwell, since he only has 4 Middle Ages books, and I totally don't mean to commit blasphemy, this book blows Grail Quest out of the water(still can't touch Warlord Chronicles though). Basically non stop, a ton of stuff happens, it's got the reality that I feel like we all crave, without totally dumping all over established tropes(an example of this would be like all modern medieval books taking the "Chivalry was all bullshit, war is horror, blah blah" stance). I feel like I'm rambling. Bottom line, this is top tier historical fiction. I'm most of the way through "The Last Achillies(best way to put it, its Greeks during the rise of Rome, 220BCish), and the writing lives up to this book. I had to come back and write this review, I'm just super impressed with this guy. He more than filled my Cornwell hole(ha), and I think I've found a new new favorite author. Love the narrator as well, but In my opinion, the vast majority of the narrators on audible are excellent, even the ones people bitch about. 10/10

Cameron's best work - perhaps ever!

Masterful ability to create the times in your head and heart! truely a fine hand which sculpts his characters bringing their form to clarity as the book progresses. My favorite historical fiction author!

Narrator sounds like private Godfrey from

Dads Army reading Peter Rabbit. Cast all sound like retirement is just around the corner.

Good enough to finish, but just so.

The narrative jumps around a bit, and poor splices in the narration do not help. The story and plot are fine, nothing special.
