After a long day of prepping a house for painting, all Gus Berry wanted was the night off to spend some time with his girlfriend and relax before having to return to work the next morning. But that isn’t going to happen. Because Gus’s co-worker Benny has found a one-night job at the local Mollymart East, a job that has to be done by morning. If Gus and his paint crew can complete the work by then, it could mean huge business with a respected, established grocery store chain.

Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches. In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father's junkyard. Her father forbade hospitals, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. Then, lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself. Her quest for knowledge transformed her.

Meh
I do agree with a previous reviewer that this story seems to be geared toward men, which is fine. More importantly, the writing is mediocre. I get bored with statements like, "he scratched his balls, then turned to the right" as if scratching balls has anything to do with his decision to turn a corner (maybe this is female ignorance -- perhaps balls help a great deal with directions, who knows?!) OR "he used his ass to open the door, then scratched his balls one last time before raising his gun." ... Ok...?? Story itself is ok, I think the situation w/ Alice was fun/entertaining but overall just meh with the whole thing.

40 ROLLS OF ASS CLEANING GOODNESS
If my headline bothers you, stop now, you will hate this book. Augustus Berry is not the most cultured of men. He is fat, balding and loves to drink himself to a stupor. He has no military experience (how unique is that for a Zombie book.), he survives, because he has watched enough horror movies to know the correct way to behave in an apocalypse.
This is gory, scary and smelly. Yea, you will smell things you don't want to smell. It is not just bloody and gory, it is very scary. Watch out for the Stephen King's "Misery" scene, but mostly watch out for the babies!!
At the time I am writing, this is free. Get this in your library before someone changes their mind. This is the best short story I have listened to, Paid for, or otherwise in a long time.
R.C. Bray is one of those narrators that is the tipping point for a book, when you are trying to decide if you should purchase.

Ugh.
All the good reviews on this mislead me. If you like terrible horror gore movies this might be for you. I couldnt make it all the way through. Not because im squeamish or because im offended easily. I just think that kind of stuff should have a purpose other than provocation. You know the moment when the director shows the monster and suddenly it just isnt scary anymore? When you start rolling your eyes because the director ruined the movie by letting the cat out of the bag and the monster is no longer scary? This book got there pretty quick. Beware. Some spoilers ahead. But honestly im probably saving your time. The books might be better than this short story, but i wont be picking them up. This one wasnt for me. Night of the living dead this aint. Do you like gore? A main character that somehow gets caught not by a clever trap... but simply by being overpowered by someone grabbing his balls even while at the same time going on and on about how careful and not stupid he is being? How about insane people that are absolutely bat guano raving bonkers, but are somehow still coherent enough to set up ambushes and overpower someone who is armed, physically stronger, and literally looking around for an ambush? Honestly this started off really strong, there was a solid buildup of anxiety and tension at the start. RC Bray is as always fantastic and the voices were great. I really wanted to like this. I even held on through most of the book hoping it would turn around because the beginning was pretty dang solid. I laughed a couple times at his internal dialogue and the early tension was great. I just wish the monster reveal hadnt been of the type that ruined things for me. If youre into buckets of blood for the sake of it, give this a go. It has tons of good reviews. Otherwise, save yourself the hour and a half.

Disgusting!
This book/short story is garbage! Amazon and Audible should be ashamed for including it in their group of free books/stories! At least not without making clear what it's about. Some will no doubt disagree with me, and laugh at my tastes. But to my mind if you like this book, it says more sick things about you than it says positive things about the book. In short, it is a zombie book. Now I admit I never understood those who relish such stories. And have frankly never read one or seen a zombie movie before. But if this is typical of the genre, it is very sad. And you don't have to be old fashioned or a "prude" to feel that way. The scenes described are sadistic, gruesome, blasphemous, and appeal to only the most depraved parts of human nature. Accounts of hordes of black slimy babies, pouring from a maternity ward to devour another human being, while egged on by a scalpel wielding "mother" who flays her living victims in order to feed her children, is disgusting. And to make the hero, a self-loathing alcoholic is incomprehensible to me. If a young person or a child ever got ahold of this story, it seems to me it could cause psychological damage. I found myself grimacing, and wincing as I listened. I continued to the end because I wanted to be able to say that I saw no redeeming value in the book whatsoever.

Not for me
I just couldn't like this one. While the narrator does a good job with the story, the story itself just didn't suit my tastes. It is well thought out, and very unlike most of the zombie drivel that is put out anymore. However, the parts that try to frighten merely end up being a squishy mess. The more suspenseful parts work well, but the horror turns out to be just the opposite.
